Myst makers Cyan are finished

Post by DRuM »

Looks like Cyan Worlds Inc who made Myst and Riven are closing up. What a shame. Those games were a bit too hard for me but classics nevertheless.

Well the clue to having a long life in the games industry is to make good games and NOT ONE THATS MAKE YOU WANT TO SET YOURSELF ON FIRE JUST TO LIVEN THINGS UP.

You know.

If you had a Mac back in 1990 or whenever, any game at all was great.

When the first myst game was released home computers could barely render 3d. The cd-rom was new, for the first time people could distribute data with out a thousand floppy disks. But now, we have games like unreal engine 3. Who's going to want to play a high rez slide show.

I would have liked to see cyan create some thing unrelated to myst.

I don't play the myst games simply because I find them too hard, BUT, I think they're wonderful anyway. I tried the demo of the latest myst and although I didn't finish it I still love the atmosphere of it, plus the 3D movement is improved and faster now.
The fact that there's hardly any talking going on or interaction with other people is very appealing to a lot of players. I always fondly remember Zork Grand Inquisitor and Zork Nemesis because they had that same atmosphere, only much easier puzzles.

Zork Nemesis: best non-Cyan Myst-style game evar.

Well they kept making squeals with each one more complex and elaborate then the last. Squeals rarely do as well as the original. They could have made a similar game, based on another fictional world. Like native american history, or a post apocalyptic future. Or how about an rpg.

I remember playing Myst on my friend's Performa 580, which absolutely rocked the house. We'd hit the lights and really get into the game. It's too bad they're giving up the series. The Myst series has been some of my favorite games. I own them all. :(

So instead of them adapting and changing the way they make games in this new age, they are just gonna fuck off?

Dumb fucks.

Do what id did. Buy/Make a new engine and start making the same old shit under a different name. Weeeeeeeeeeee!

Whats wrong with snapping up UE3, getting some new talent on the team, and making the same Myst type game under a different name/plot, in 3D, but with the same old movement/puzzle system?

I think it's more about people wanting to play all bells and whistles action games rather than thinking adventures, hence the reason the point n click sort of died out. It's only the diehard adventure fans that play those games.

troo
also, using the UE3 engine but keeping the same Myst movement (zip!) seems rather pointless :dork:
