GCW Zero - The open source gaming handheld
GCW Zero - The open source gaming handheld
It's on Kickstarter:

There's a demonstration video on that Kickstarter page.

Finally a handheld that does what the "homebrew" scene has been trying with so-called "closed" consoles. I wouldn't install Custom FirmWare on my PSP cause the whole point of a console like that is it's supposed to be how Sony - in the PSP's case - want it. I say you should have things made how you want them and this GCW Zero is what you want for emulation (or anything really custom) on a handheld. Open source, see.
My 2p is it should have OpenAL aswell as the OpenGL it already has.
I'd also like it to instead of 320x240 be 1280x960 with some nice scanlines effects (and better looking 3D games), but apparently that is too much to ask for at this stage.

That screen res is way too low...

Re: GCW Zero - The open source gaming handheld
320x240? Seriously?

Re: GCW Zero - The open source gaming handheld
It's equal to or higher res than practically any game it's likely to emulate. (Believe it or not, those old games and consoles were running at very low res.)

True, but, and forgive me for not reading any articles you linked to, is the main goal of this device to be a platform for emulating old 8-bit era games or is it supposed to be a full blown gaming platform?DTS wrote:It's equal to or higher res than practically any game it's likely to emulate. The PSP screen is 480x272, 272 is only 32 more than 240 (320x240), making the PSP screen only 1/10th or 10% higher vertical res.

8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit including PC games, I think it can do N64 aswell, and it's open for development so people can make more games for it (or whatever else they want to run on it). It's got an analogue nub and tilt controls too. They showed tilt being used to play Descent. Doom, Duke Nukem and Quake all run on it; they are in the video on the Kickstarter page (I linked to). Also look up Project Shield

Actually it won't do N64, I just watched the video again and they said anything up to the PlayStation. Most PS1 games were 320x240, n'est pas? (It was Gran Turismo that broke that and only 2 tracks, then in GT2 it was full game.)
