FTL particle experiment confirms results

Post by feedback »

http://www.manilanews.net/story/2011340 ... -discovery
Critics of the first experiment at the research facility at Cern in the Swiss Alps said that the long bunches of neutrinos used could introduce an error into the test, so the experiment was repeated with shorter bunches.

The findings were the same as the first experiment, with neutrinos sent through 730 kilometres of rock to a giant detector at the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy arriving 60 billionths of a second faster than light would over the same distance.
Crazy stuff.
I love quake!

I wonder how long before it means anything to us plebs.

Would be cool if they were actually creating those particles 60 billionths of a second in the past.

- and we'll be able to play through rock without cables?

So a sub-atomic particle of infinitely small mass was measured as faster than light speed through a non-vacuum. How is this news?

How about we pass an atom through a vacuum at a faster than light speed and report on that first.

Oh right, we're all idiots that don't really understand what Einstein said.

I'm not a sensationalist and didn't flunk physics like the idiots in the media. The followup article that nobody talks about:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15830844

The lack of a unifying theory in physics opens up doors to many possibilities. However, reporting on unverified results is retarded. If you put the same amount of effort from your shit comment into some research, you'd find that quantum theory touches on faster than light speeds and how it applies to different sub-atomic particles.

The point I got from it is that the goal is to simply understand what is causing that result. Hyping it up as a disproving Einstein's theories is retarded, but it is still a very interesting puzzle to crack. My under-educated guess is that the speed of light isn't being surpassed, but there is some other quantum mechanical explanation. Or maybe it is being surpassed and it's just another incompatibility between quantum mechanics and relativity.

k so the verdict is in:

Faster-than-light neutrino result reportedly a mistake caused by loose cable

the scientific method triumphs once again

well, technically, the verdict isn't in because they haven't yet tested the hypothesis; however a loose cable is a more plausible explanation than one that means re-writing the laws of physics

right, looks like they are also going through with the previous tests they had lined up.

That's the difference between science and religion: scientists admit it when they're wrong.
