I'm enjoying my personal Android phone (Samsung Galaxy). However, when I think of meat and potatoes (functionality, speed), I think of RIM products. The app store sucks, but that's not what you're looking for anyhow.

so many free apps to play with makes android my choice OS but I am hating google more and more each day since they ruined gmail.

You had it for over a year, it worked fine and you loved it.

Why did the screen die? Did you drop it, get it wet or otherwise cause that to happen? Did it just die on its own? Might have been a bum unit and therefore replaceable/fixable under warranty? What did you do about it? Did you chase up the warranty or just give up for some reason?

High-end Android would be flagship devices from the big manufacturers, at this point I'd restrict myself to just Samsung or HTC though.

Not sure what happened to the screen. Didn't drop it or get it wet, and I bought a fairly beefy case for it the day I bought it that never came off. The Droid was a slide out phone, so the way it started was that about 50% of the time when I slid out the keyboard, the screen would get highly distorted upon "re-orientating" itself. I could see each horizontal line re-drawing slowly across the screen, and eventually it would just get stuck and I would be left with this shit display of half the original display and half the new wide-screen display. Eventually it got worse and worse and sliding the keyboard out made the display lock up. After that the display completely died and all that would ever happen is the back-light would come up but the display would fail. I almost wonder if it over-heated and some component was damaged. I had it overclocked rather high. I think the default clock speed was 800mhz and I had it running at 1.2ghz or maybe more, can't remember. I never had any issues other than that. I'm starting to think I should have just bought another Droid after that one died but for some reason I figured that something new would be better.


@bitwise: the droid was a ~$350-400 (maybe more?) phone when I bought it, as was this HTC Desire (I think $400+ IIRC) so I don't think I'm buying low-end models. Like I said, physically speaking, the phone itself is quite sturdy. I'm just at odds with the way these Thai-guys have done their firmware. I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and root the shit out of it and see what I can get it to do. Just pisses me off that stuff like this even needs to be done at all.

hahah well I didn't get pissed. I had it overclocked for more than 6 months with no problems. Seems odd that, if it did overheat, it would suddenly do so.

This is what the Motorola does on start up. The logo is shifted to the left (wtf?) and the bottom right has some garbley bullshit. Never changes from this display.

aye - my vodafone 'htc desire s' was fine when i got it then they rolled out an update that changed a bunch of stuff - the worst part of which was adding a cartoon ring pull to the lock screen so you have to drag the ring over the 'answer' icon to pick up a call instead of just dragging your finger up the screen. why ffs, is it checking for a minimum level of sobriety?

they've also added a vodafone branded music store with a button to open it slap-bang in the middle of the default audio player - there's a whole bunch of stuff like that, but you can't uninstall any of it without rooting the phone and none of it works properly anyway - i tried the music store just out of interest (it popped up an advert while i was listening to die antwoord claiming that they sold the album) - they didn't, and even if they did i couldn't have bought it because the minisite for the shop was in spanish and there was no option to choose another locale. not that it would've helped if i had an address in madrid, because the store was trying to charge me in yen - fucking yen. this thing was configured by the chef from the muppets.

so i had to spend a whole evening being a speccy nerd just to get my telephone/pda to work. was kind of worth it in that my phone is now totally awesome and everything is set up to just zap a new handset if anything happens to this one - but debranding should be an option from day one, at least until the carriers can write software that doesn't suck.

still - it's a good thing to be able to be pissed off about, life is easy here.

i bought a samsung tocco lite about a year ago which is a cheap piece of shit but it allows me to talk to people far away which at the end of the day is all you can really ask of phone

also, can i add, to anyone who bought a phone with its internet capabilities in mind: you have thereby forfeited your 'mocking-someone-for-spending-too-much-time-on-the-internet' privileges

I am still much pleased with my slightly old Galaxy S, possibly the most fantastic phone i ever had tbh

I'll be switching to whatever samsung is offering by the time this contract ends.
