GTKRadiant 1.4.0 vs GTKRadiant 1.5.0

Post by Dessicated corpse »

Which one is better and why? I think GTKRadiant 1.4.0 is better! It has more features included in it!

Both have it's advantages. 1.4 has always been more stable but 1.5 has the better texture browser and feels smother to me. Then again the way 1.5 handles vertex points is stupid.

There's been a similar discussion going on a few months ago when Aeon came back for some time (where're you now? ), it's to be found here. Otherwise the changelog might help.

I use 1.4 for the majority of my mapping and 1.5 for finishing touches (textures and stuff).

1.4 is so much easier, I don't like the brush selection in the 3d view of 1.5 and the texture selection view :>

I use 1.5 almost exclusively these days. Sometimes I'll play around with 1.6 or NetRadiant. I don't use 1.4 at all.

@cityy: Well, let's hope he returns safe and sound, there're still some projects left. ;)

ZeroRadiant 1.6 is only a test build.

1.5 these days...much easier for handling models. Texturing in 1.5 is crap compared to 1.4.....but it depends how you work.
The main advantage in 1.5 as far as I can see is stopping newbs creating bad brushes by dragging verts about trying to create terrain and stuffs.

Seriously? I hate it if people remove powerful tools and claim they did it for your own good. :puke:

Oh no, people could create a bad brush with this, help!

A bad brush. So what?!

1.4 for texturing, 1.5 for models. I have been using both in sync for ages. A better question might have been which apps do you use to create a map....for me it's:
GTK 1.4
GTK 1.5
Gimp
Blender
q3map2
bspc
winzip

//edit forgot...editpad and hexedit

I recently dumped using frontend apps for the compilers in favour of batchfiles, which I can work must faster with.

and then hardware apart from my laptop....

My camera

These days gimp and blender are the apps I spend most time with.

I really have to agree with donkey, the only reason im using 1.5 is for models and I really miss the Z window in 1.4 (and yes i know you can switch view or have multiple view but i always manage to drag the mouse to the side so the brushes moves with it in the xz, yz views.)

Just throwing in an honorable mention for Q3Radiant, I've just never found better. Sure 1.4 has paint select which is awesome, and 1.5 has that rotation gizmo which is super awesome for placing models. But for pure brush/texture work I don't think its beatable.

After I was essentially forced to start using 1.5.0 after swapping to Win7, I've gotten used to it and don't bother with 1.4.0 anymore.

Can't say I've ever been a fan of GTK, its UI is just backwards... Classic Linux.

So much misinformedness in a single line. Impressive.

GtkRadiant is hardly the poster child for the GTK UI framework as a whole.

I'm sure if you grew up using Linux and GTK, you'd look at a Windows application running in WINE and say...

Amen! Still using 1.2.1 for nearly everything (especially brush and texture work, that's my personal Q3Radiant) and 1.5.0 only for some special compiling options and something so unimportant that I even can't remember it right now. And before ppl start praising 1.5.0 for its easy use with multiple selection of single brush sides: that has already been possible in 1.2.1! Just use CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+LMB :toothy: z-window for president!
