Why Did Quake 4 Fail?

Post by Neillithan »

I know this has probably been talked about for ages, but I've never quite understood clearly why Quake 4 didn't become the true professional successor to Quake 3. I realize the game looks like diarrhea poop stains, but I don't think that's the entire reason why it failed. I've never been a true Quake player--my strengths lie with UT2004 and UT3. I can name a hundred reasons why UT3 failed. But what I'm more interested in, is why Quake went so downhill to the point that Quake 3 had to be remade into Quake Live, instead of ID bringing us a true graphical improvement with the same Quake 3 gameplay. And honestly, Quake Live is not a graphical improvement. My idea of a graphical improvement is something with Xbox360/PS3 graphics at the very LEAST.

What are your reasons for why you think Quake 4 failed to become the professional / competitive FPS?

The guy looks like something's wrong with him when he runs.

Also, if you were playing Q3 from Q3's release date you would have to upgrade your PC massively to play Q4.

Furthermore, Q3 is about fast-paced gameplay at high frames-per-second (FPS). - The Doom3 engine is pretty much the same as the Quake4 engine, except the lighting is better in Q4 somehow - People were saying about D3 and Q4 that they got really high spec PCs to make sure they'd get something like 40 FPS, which is below even the 60 FPS solid you get in console games from the 1990s...

In short; media failure and software [Edit: By "software I meant "programming"] failure. You could say hardware failure aswell I suppose, but who are id software to say what hardware should do? It's not like they invented 3D graphics or anything. Look at Sony's consoles, the PlayStation was the first machine to really push 3D graphics, better than anything the PC was doing at the time. It was based on stuff made for TV. Polophony Digital made sure GT PSP got a solid 60 FPS. Whereas id software said they are going for 30 FPS or something for their next game, Rage [Edit: Or was that Doom4 they were talking about? Whatever...], while having it (the gameplay) go at the speed of the original Doom. Sad...

I don't play the game so I don't know why it failed. You don't have to call me a moron for being unsure.

Q4 didn't receive multiplayer focus, it was mostly singleplayer. This really, really showed in the multiplayer component. Just didn't feel tight.

id being id, rewrote large portions of the engine code while retaining only a very small team of developers.

Those 2 points pretty much cover the gist of it. There were a host of other issues that probably contributed.

Primarily, though, for Q3 players to shift to another game they needed to be offered something that did the things they were used to, but better. The folks that remained with Q3 by the time Q4 came out were already seriously dug into their game and not the kind of folks that couldn't live without the latest graphics tech. So just turn it around and consider what Q4 offered the Q3 online community that Q3 didn't? Barely anything. And what did it take away? Tons.

lol. Well, thanks to those of you who actually responded with a well thought out answer. I appreciate it. I challenge anyone that calls me a moron to a 1v1 in UT3. Accept and you'll get the beating of a lifetime or deny and you'll get the pussy title. Oh, and you can't say you don't have the game as an excuse because it's 10 bucks on Steam. Do it.

Wait, winning at a videogame would somehow make you not be a moron? scared? is fucking amazing at Q3, as is Duhard and they're both total morons. I think the fact that you came here and started yapping about UT3 pretty much proves that you're a moron, moron.

You have to know the community before you can start giving it or its members names. Since you are new here you are excused.
