His crash is because of something that has modified the OS, no bones about it.
the chance of the upgraddign process is greator to fuck up rather then a clean install, unless you know 100% what the computer is runnign and if it will have an issue with SP2. in that case, where you are talking about a controlled software library, its a little easyer to tell if something is going to blow up Vs a home user..
i admin a small network on the side for a small company, ( win 2003 server, ~50 clients ) and upgrading them to sp2, all went well except two pc's that blew up.. no problem, recovered it, and left them run SP1 untill i could reinstall the O/S compleatly..
wile Homeusers that i also repair, its allways a 50/50 shot because of the uncontrolled Software isntalls as well as the shitty programs that they log in..
you need to think in retrospect, A controlled office, Vs a homeuser..
