I'm a sysadmin and know so. Installed SP2 on about 50+ existing installs without so much as a hiccup.

His crash is because of something that has modified the OS, no bones about it.
well its good for another fellow admin to voice his opinion... but.. mine tends to go along with ~75% of all of the admins in northamerica... :p

the chance of the upgraddign process is greator to fuck up rather then a clean install, unless you know 100% what the computer is runnign and if it will have an issue with SP2. in that case, where you are talking about a controlled software library, its a little easyer to tell if something is going to blow up Vs a home user..

i admin a small network on the side for a small company, ( win 2003 server, ~50 clients ) and upgrading them to sp2, all went well except two pc's that blew up.. no problem, recovered it, and left them run SP1 untill i could reinstall the O/S compleatly..

wile Homeusers that i also repair, its allways a 50/50 shot because of the uncontrolled Software isntalls as well as the shitty programs that they log in..

you need to think in retrospect, A controlled office, Vs a homeuser..

You thing about that and get back to me.

ONLY install SP2 when its slipstreamed on the XP that you are installing.. trust me on this one.

I don't disagree with that, but it's rather a step down from your previous blanket statement.

WP for not noticing the bit about using safe mode, and the recovery console.

Both of which probably work just fine.

Never install SP2 unless its a fresh install..

Or SlipSteamed..

Otherwise its best to leave it off..

50/50 shot it works if its a old install thats had tons of shit installed and uninstalled..

Don't worry about fucking up the file rights. That's all they are, file rights, your data will always be okay. :)

Taking ownership simply wipes the file security tables and sets the user you selected as, essentially as far as the file is concerned, as the adminsitrator of that file(s).

But i'm buggered if I can figure out how to 'take ownership' and be able to access this folder

Would someone be kind enough to talk me through this please?
As usual the help docs are about as useful as farting at a hurricane :icon27:
Cool Blue wrote:You need to take ownership of the old 'My Documents' folder.

Right click the folder > Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner

Select your current user from the list of users in the dialog box. They click 'apply'. Can take a few minutes to overwrite the security, but afterwords you'll have full access again.

Agreed. I've never had a problem applying SP2 to any system. Must be over 500 by now too.

Right, no lies now. And I'm not even drunk (yet - *opens celebtratory can*)...
I fucking LOVE you guys.

Jesus christ I've never been so relieved in my entire fucking life. And that includes numerous pregnancy scares and realising I'm still alive after being hit by a twat on a motorbike.

THANK YOU!!!

Now, I can boot into normal mode and access this folder to back it up right?
Or do I have to back up now as admin?

I hope nero works.....

It is great to read that in one of the last posts.
I was wondering how I could help, since I have spent hours repairing things like that. Believe me I understand what a frustration it is, specially when it says -you can't access this account, ask the permission to the administrative of this computer. But this computer is yours.
You need a lot...a lot of patience.
