a greeting card company firing people around christmas... that's almost as funny as my friend who got laid off from a staffing company.
They did it now and are paying everyone through the end of their fiscal year, Feb 28th. Then their regular severance packages kick in.

well that sucks. if i were kracus i'd gloat too, its a bit of a lesson in humility perhaps.

still its really homo. even tho you already wanted to leave, it still so much sweeter when its your own choice.

I haven't even started it. It's only a one year program here though.

Same place as last time or have you moved since then?

I've been laid off twice in eight years... luckily my job is pretty much ironclad now.

I just realized how many of my friends work in banking. Either directly for the business or in support like IT.

JE (laid off last week) and ME
DS and KS - one will likely lose their job soon
BW and LS - bank is deciding whether to completely close up at the end of December
EH
DS

I have a feeling I might be missing a couple more.

Most of my friends work in health care. It's a big industry here.

I'm feeling it. big ticket items aren't really on the top of anyone's list right now. I'm giving away 85-90% of my commissions just to keep product moving. I guess I'm due though, we had a 28% markup going for years and nobody blinked.

i got a promotion a couple weeks ago with a nice pay increase.

my boss was laid off last week, and our vp desperately wants to keep me around.

i'm thinking "thanks of course, but where in the fuck am i gonna go right now anyway?" lol

the promotion was long overdue, and came right before the layoffs, so it was kinda bittersweet anyway.

Sweet.

It's been at a cost for me. I'm taking on a shit load more work, some of it not nice.
I'll have the final say in firing someone this Friday and apart from it being Christmas, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to do.

Hopefully you can snag a good job.

I think the economy is having a balanced effect on our business. On the one hand we can sell our software easier because it helps reduce costs and increase efficiency, etc, etc. On the other hand it is harder for our clients to keep existing and gain new customers in this kind of situation.

I'm sure it is, I think it's one of those things that most people hope they never have to do. I haven't had to fortunately, but it's inevitable eventually.

I'm taking on a shit load more work as well - but everybody in the company is taking on extra stuff right now, getting more done with less people.
