Economic Crisis hits home

Post by Jackal »

Well, I got the big ole layoff today. My first time ever being laid off and it's 100% due to the economy right now. I feel like a walking cliche.

The bright side is I get $11K severence pay and I've been looking to transition out of this place for a while. The way I see it I can have a good holiday and start to concentrate on either finding a new job or going back to school to get my education degree in the new year.

Anyone else feeling the crunch due to the economy?

My company got rid of nearly 100 positions a week and a half ago.

That's out of about 1000 employees.

That's shitty, or is it? Sometimes you need a kick up it to find a better job.

It's tuff over here as well, everyone's giving that little bit more on a smaller budget.

My company is closing next February after being in business since 1952. However, it is due more to bonehead management decisions than the economy. A loss of 450 jobs.

That sucks man, let's hope you find something new soon.

We haven't felt it that bad yet, although we did let one of our admin staff go this week. Some of our clients are definitely feeling it though.

60 people got laid off in my new place 4 weeks after I started. Lucky I am only 1 of 2 people in the building that can do my job so I am safe apparently.

Unlucky Jackal - shitty time for it to happen but still, least you have Christmas off...?

Jackal wrote:Have you become disgusted with people? I am continually astounded on a day to day basis with just how petty, childish, and stupid some people can be. Some of the employees I have to deal with here are worse behaved than my pre-teen little cousins and will accept no responsibility for anything they do unless they're receiving praise for it.

I am floored by how often people will knowingly do something wrong and then later, when you confront them about it, claim that they "didn't know" despite the fact that you've talked about it before on many occassions. Also, oftentimes I find people come to me with questions that they already know the answer to in hopes that I will bend the rules for them or perhaps hope that I've forgotten what I've previously said and give them some sort of carte blanche to do whatever they want.

Then these same people have the nerve to get pissy when you won't bend the rules for them because it "makes their life harder". Tough shit. Every time I bend the rules it makes MY job that much harder.

Honestly, as I get older I'm becoming more and more disgusted with the maturity level of supposed "adults" when it comes to the work place. What ever happened to professionalism? Is it that hard to act like a normal person between 9-5 Mon-Fri?

Yes... I think I have.
Κracus wrote:Don't take this the wrong way cause I think you're a complete tool for the most part but seriously, if you find everyone you're managing is a complete tool then obviously you're doing something wrong.

The quality of the work that people do for you is a direct result of the leadership skills you bring to the table. It's easy to just blame them instead of looking at yourself but all the awnsers are right there.

You've always struck me as a bit of a negative individual, a bit high up tooting your own horn. I would expect exactly what you're describing from an individual like yourself, of course all I have to go by are the various comments I've read of yours on these threads for close to a decade. Who knows, maybe you don't sound like some chick on pms when you're not posting here. I doubt that however.
Ouch. Guess I wasn't the only that saw it that way. Sorry for your loss tho, I'm sure with all those pieces of paper you'll find another job in no time.

yes, he will. enjoy the holiday jackal.

in the same position as grudge here - nothing's hit close to home yet but have heard grim stories from clients. the most recent is a scrap metal dealer, his prices are going up and down like a dock whore's knickers. one day he's sitting on a goldmine and the next it costs too much to start the crane up. he's had to sack 2 (of 5) blokes (with no 11k parachute) since november and isn't sure how long he'll last.

That sucks, but like you say, opportunities to take other avenues.

Bizarrely, my place is very actively hiring.

Did you guys know that Kracus is the cause of the recession? I didn't. But he wins.

Kracus, you can gloat if you want (in fact I probably would if it was you) but, yes, I do have confidence my pieces of paper will either land me a job or at least open the door to new opportunities.

Frankly, I haven't been happy there for a while so I'm going to take my money and enjoy my holidays and then start looking for work in the new year. If I can't find any I go back to school so it's a win/win.

Have a good holiday Kracus. I'll request your cubicle when I'm looking at getting rid of my long distance on Christmas day.

Well that's good dude, in all seriousness, I'm really not celebrating your bad luck and I really do hope you find something else that's better. Just stay away from saint john eh?

The company I work for made 43 Billion Euro's profit last year. The team I am in will be expanding in the new year and I am one out of six people who have had £40,000 worth of training spent on them. Yes, next year I will have my Cisco CCIE number.
