Q4 really needs some new ctf maps. However the ppl that play ctf are a hard crowd to please. If you think the layout got potential, go for it.

I don't have Q4, but don't let that stop anyone!

On the map: it was suggested to work obsidian's midfield into the new map that i posted. i actually opened up radiant the other day and took a look. Out of pure coincidence, the two areas are the same size and the entrance ways are a pretty close match. instead of cramming it in though, i'll probably just rebuild what is there to match then i'll post it here, hopefully tonight (with lights added to the water tunnels!).

@goth-
Thanks for the input :) I can see real potential in a map like this as far as atmophere goes in Q4.

Actually me either at this time. I bought Q4; played the single player portion and beat the game. I then put it to the side. Later I somehow knocked the Q4 disk on the floor from a shelf under my computer desk and then rolled over it with my chair. :dork: Now it has a nice big crack from the center to the edge on one side. :tear:

I was told that I could download a replacement quicklaunch icon that would let me use Q4 without haveing the disk in, but it turns out that it is just a No CD crack and I would have to download the entire game along with it on a bit torrent copy of the game.
Since I bought the game already I really thought about doing it, but decided I didn't want any part of what is probably pirate copy of Q4.
So I will just end up going out and buying a new copy.

That is what I said a few posts ago. Cool. When my friends and I played the maps they all said that the middle room was sweet and had great atmosphere. Especially after I changed the 3 pits into 1 big pit and changed my bridge into a platform and 2 ramped runways and you placed items and changed the lava to the green glowing murky water. Thay all agreed that if we were going to keep just one room that would be the one to keep.

Anyway that is pretty cool. :D

So any thoughts on the Q4 outdoor trenches area theme?

Will try to catch you guys on IRC tonight. Will idle there for a while at about 7 p.m. est.

Later guys :)
Uh, well....good luck with that.

Good for you, make pjw proud. You can also try contacting Activision and see if they can do anything for you. Otherwise, Q4 is cheap these days in bargain bins.

BTW, one of the official Q4 point releases (I think the first one) sidesteps the need for the disc.

I've recently seen q4 for € 10 here.

Hey, folks, bad news here. :(
Just a few days ago, my GPU(@AGPx4) had gone for unknown reason!
So I switched back to partially broken old Geforce3 but it also couldn't be recognized at bios initialization.
I thought this might potentially be the problem of AGP slot on mainboard.
So, as a last resort I downgraded to GeforceMX420 PCI.
Now everything works fine but slower than ever before. :( (It's hard to walk through even q3dm17sample.map.)

That all being said, transition to Q4 is definitely a NO-NO!
The only thing I could do would be texture creation and mapobject modeling for Q3 at the moment.

I have Q4 on my laptop, I just set up the +set com_allowconsole 1 +editor so i can use q4 editor. Only thing is my laptop has a Intel GMA950 so playtesting would be out of the question.

Well the editor needs a hefty system dude, more so than just running a map straight from Q4.

Hefty? A fairly low end box with just enough RAM will do these days.

Personally, I think swapping engines isn't a good idea at this stage since it just means more work. You guys don't even have a finalized alpha yet and you'll have to scrap pretty much every layout you have so far since Q3 scales != Q4 scales. You're headed by way of Duke Nukem Forever and their continuous engine jumping.

You need to remember dude he just said "playtesting will be out of the question", which means his rigs not up to running the game.

Then you need to remember that a HUGE part of Q4 editing is in realtime, not just a grid.

Lastly, you need to remember that when editing in real time in D3/Q4 (As in, RTL in the preview or even ingame with the editor in the background), its slower, much slower.

So, yeah, hefty.

The 3 year old computer sitting on my desk does just fine for Q4 editing. That's hardly what I would call "hefty", though I guess you can argue that the definition of hefty is pretty ambiguous depending on your standards.

Excuse me? No need to be a twat, the point I was making is if he cant run Quake 4, then he wont be able to have much luck with the editor.

Jesus what a knob.

Boy, you sure get upset easily, checked your blood pressure recently? He needs a better computer than that, for sure... I'm not arguing that. But by saying he needs a "hefty" computer, you made it sounded like he needed a Q6600 along with a pair of 8800GTS or something.

BTW, rereading my post...
though I guess you can argue that the definition of hefty is pretty ambiguous depending on your standards.
... that may have sounded like an unintentional flame. I meant to say that while you may consider my 3 year old rig "hefty" I would think otherwise. If you thought there was some other meaning in that, it was strictly unintentional.

Oh don't get me wrong, it runs...
At about 12-25fps @ 800x600/Low settings. But I don't think that's enjoyable enough to run around a map and have fun.

It's got a dual core Proc too.

Intel onboard GPU is what's hurting me.

I was thinking of getting a XPS 1730 but i want to make sure there's nothing better for games on high settings/dev in the portable flavor.

hey no need for name calling or petty arguments. it's simply unprofessional.

the q3/q4 thing. switching is a bad idea. i would rather stay with q3 because if it goes to q4, then i am out since i don't have it and won't buy it.

No fussing in q3w ctf ptm!

Q3 "as well as" Q4 was just an idea. Nothing final.

The idea was to complete this project and map in Q3 and then consider maybe if it is popular enough making a Q4 version release some time later.

Now moving on.

I been busy like many of us with RL stuff. I still stop in almost every day and see what has been said and what has been done.

I still seem to be having problems with IRC it will not find the server or something like that. I will get it figured out. If one of you would not mind sending or post a link to where I cam DL the correct version I will go from there.

Well back to work...ugh

Later :)
Uh, well....good luck with that.

and i haven't been anywhere to be seen nor have i dont an iota of work on anything related to this ptm in the last week. i'm not sure what the status of anything is, but i am certainly preoccupied in real life and i think it will be that way for a while. i had hoped we would move a bit faster.

I had hoped and immagined the same thing.

Right now the most time I can afford on the project is tuesday mornings for sure and some weekend time.

So to move this along. It would be a big help if everyone on the team would post a link to the version they think should be our final layout. If you want to build it fresh, modify an existing version or just post a link to a version already posted that is fine. Lets just get on with this thing and see it finished.

When you post your nomination please explain why you like it best and what areas in it you like best.

Once this is done we will move on from there.

Thanks to you all and talk to ya soon. :)

I like my middle ground area. Seems like everyone else likes it to since it just won't die. Might as well keep that part and move on.

I like your middle ground area too. So here it is, patched in my most recent map, with minor modifications to make it fit. This is also the map that gets my vote.

q3ctfptm_v4.zip

One known issue is that the fog brush in the middle is broken for some strange reason. I'm not sure why and the error has eluded my judgment... if someone looks at this and manages to fix it, let me know what the problem was so I can put my mind at ease. :miffed:

Play, enjoy, edit or add to or delete, and send feedback. I'm also swamped at work with pre-pro on my next game, so the chances that I will get to contribute any more even-remotely significant work are slim.

/woops, bad at stuff

I agree with both of you. I just DL wattro's v4. Gonna have a look. I liked his last version as well. So the two areas put together I am sure will be really nice.

Gonna have a look at v4. Get back on that later today or tomorrow.

Have a great weekend guys. Talk to ya in a bit. :)
