You obviously haven't visited the bigsoccer.com forums. But I don't blame you. :p

I'm sure most people know that the US team just wasn't good enough yet.

But I'm also pretty sure that, if you asked people on the street why the US didn't make it to the round of 16, they'd either say:

1. "Huh?"

or

2. "We got robbed by that ref who is a dentist."

EVERY team that had the misfortune of being ref'd by mr dentist got the shaft. i mean look at some of those calls against Italy that game?
that's not why the US lost.

i agree that there hasn't been a real noticeable increase in dives exactly but there's been a huge increase in my opinion of embellishment of contact.

FIFA cracking down on rough plays or whatever has caused a few problems. one of them is that yellow cards are flying all over the place and another problem is that if a player even gets touched, he will "embellish" it, go down and get the foul. refs don't know what to do. with FIFA trimming down on what's allowed, embellishment clouds any sort of rough play and refs are calling all sorts of bullshit calls and fucking up games left and right.

anyway, i dont think its necessarily "diving" but just making shit seem like a much bigger deal than it really is. there's been way too much start and stop in this world cup and players are falling over everything as juggs has been complaining about.

i never said that diving has increased - every four years i see the same shit. you have to understand, we in the states don't get to see worldclass football at ALL. MLS? LOL, don't make me laff.

imo, some pussy laying there holding his chin, writhing in pain like he was just shot, takes away from the flow of the game because play will stop most likely. football's a great sport, but alot of these guys are either huge pussies or good actors. you pick.

I'd say in 80% of the cases they're acting. But imo it's just part of the game... I agree it takes away from the flow of the game - but sometimes that's exactly what they want.

EDIT: in the dutcho team we have this guy called Van Bommel - he's good, but not uberskilled. But he does do a few things like noone else, like committing the nastiest fouls without the ref seeing it, irritating an opponent so he'll get pissed off and fuck up, stuff like that. That makes him pretty much invaluable to the team, it must be incredibly irritating to play against him.

Same with Van der Vaart, who has perfected the skill of taking a convincing dive. It's gets him a free kick almost every time, and then there's an oppertunity for a goal. Cowardly and not-honorable? Probably so. Effective? Absolutely.

I agree. But FIFA wants to clamp down on shirt-pulling, so the refs have to give yellows.
