Foo, THIS actually mentions the exact situation I am aiming at. IOQuake coders giving permission to id to release it under a non-GPL license. Point moot, this is what Riddla and I mean.

Foo is right, everyone else is wrong.

The GPL is a viral license; inclusion of GPL'ed code taints the project as a whole. iD cannot use the ioquake3 source until they get signed permission from every single contributor, many who have disappeared from the scene.

In short, it is not possible.

EDIT: damn, this topic was still at page 1 when I started typing my reply.

That constitutes a problem. People may have moved on away from ioquake but them being modders I can't imagine they vanished from the internet. It may be hard and neigh impossible but it is possible.

Also, I'd like to thank iD for having the courtesy to maintain and update a game this old. I, for one, applaud them for it.

werd.

SoM said he gets movement problems with the patch though (like the player feels heavy) and someone at esr mentioned pb problems when connecting to a server, but I dunno how valid those things are, I haven't tested.

SyncError, does this also apply to Elite Force? Raven made this using the Q3TA engine if I'm correct.
If so, is there going to be an update for this game as well? (It's not played by many people, but the ones still playing it are very loyal/stubborn)

I am one of the stubborn players of Elite Force. Hehe, :p
I, in many ways, think that EF was superior to Q3. Weapon balance, for example.....I also liked alt fire and the colorful maps...and most of all OPEN maps...like q3ctf4....none of this corridor fighting...always a chance to nail the flag carrier.

However the Star Trek title kept many Q3 fans away. Tis ashame. Oh well, I've pretty much gone Q3 because not many peeps left in EF.

I doubt EF will get the patch. Heck the game is not even punkbustered. I still enjoy it, but hard to have fun with empty servers and bots. :icon23:

That would be pretty much my reason then. =]

I don't think I've ever played that game, but I really don't want to be shooting phasers and other 'laser lightguns', I prefer the more manly weapons q3 has to offer. :p

Sounds a lot like Unreal Tournament. :D Don't get me wrong--I think that's a good thing, as I spent several years playing UT regularly (1999-2002ish). I probably would have enjoyed EF too...

Well, in my case, it was only the particular incarnation (Voyager) that kept me away, not Star Trek. I grew up watching TNG and loved it. Voyager was rather disappointing in comparison. I shouldn't have drawn conclusions about EF based solely on that, but I did.

Unfortunately, there's no way for me to give it a second chance now, since Activision discontinued it and new copies are both expensive and hard to come by. That's rather sad too, considering that Q3 Gold is available new for $10 these days.

Another good thing about EF is that the strafing is just like Q3. The only thing is that the Euro leagues decided on a g_speed of 250(default). That was simply too slow for the US crowd. We settled on 275. We couldn't go 320 because of the map size. The maps played in EF are generally wide open and mid size. Most players also generally didn't like corrider fighting.

EF got really big in Germany. It was big too in the US as well during it's time. Now, around 5 years after it's release it's finally getting pretty empty. You can catch some good games every 3 or 4 nights. Just not like it used to be.....

Raven made EF. That is one reason I had such high hopes for Q4. They kinda let me down. Don't get me wrong, the single player was "ok", but I upgraded my rig for the multiplayer.

I think Q4 needs open maps, better netcode, Alt fire, and most of all players if it is going to make a comeback....however this is a discussion for the Q4 forum. Oops....

So tell me, who has ever had problem with Quake 3 Arena caused by bugs in it, with the exception of punkbuster? Me? Never.

I don't feel that another patch is really nescessary. And I mean, for gods sake, the game is 7 years old. You've done with 1.32 for 3, maybe 4 years. You're probably used to any bugs you encounter by now or found a workaround.

Yes, when I try to connect to a 1.32b server using the 1.32c quake3.exe on a server with pb it kicks me within about 20 seconds due to memory error. Haven't tried a non pb server yet.

I suspect you are thinking of in-game bugs. The patch iD released fixes something far more serious, an exploit that allows a malicious server to execute arbitrary code on the client (i.e. root the box).

That's the point, isn't it? It is known now so it's only a matter of time before it shows up in the wild.
