DVD compatability question

Post by Scarface »

So, my parents rented Flight Plan with jodie foster ( not a good movie btw ). However it wouldn't play in their player, so they took it back for another copy of it, still wouldn't load. Both dvds were free of scratches and smudges.

I'm thinking it's the player. It's a first generation dvd player from toshiba, i think my dad bought it in 98 or 99. This is only the second time this has happened, how is it possible that a small seclect few dvds are unplayable?

It has all the options, including progressive scan, etc.

Edit: In the end, i loaded it up on my ps2 and it played perfectly

It could be the anti-theft strips they put on them. My parents' dvd player has trouble with those. I don't know why, but it's only discs they rent or borrow from the library.

DVD players are so cheap now, I've seen some for like $50-60 and the newer ones have xvid/divx support. In my experience Philips & LG makes pretty good ones.

actually, that only holds true for the first revision ps2s

ps2s dvd playback is not as smooth as a standalone player though

you get what you pay for video quality-wise with a low end player.

actually there's nothing not "smooth" about it. it's got horrible black level issues and renders a bit grainy in tests.

DVD manufacturing has been modified over the years to reduce costs. First gen players sometimes have problems with that.

It's a known issue.

Nope, it plays dual-layer perfectly.

May as well tell my parents it's time for a new one. My dad will be pissed tho, since it cost him $1000 :olo: , ahhhh, new technology sucks

Time for a new DVD player.

Shit cheap ones play NTSC and PAL because it costs extra to include the encoding chip.
