House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert has told federal officials that the lighted, decorated tree on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol -- known in recent years as the "Holiday Tree" -- should be renamed the "Capitol Christmas Tree," as it was called until the late 1990s.
The Capitol's senior landscape architect confirmed the name switch yesterday for The Washington Times.
"It was known as the 'Holiday Tree' for several years and just recently was changed back to the 'Capitol Christmas Tree.' This was a directive from the speaker," said Capitol architect Matthew Evans.
"The speaker believes a Christmas tree is a Christmas tree, and it is as simple as that," said Ron Bonjean, spokesman for the Illinois Republican.
This is why I hate the real 'bleeding-heart' liberals. Did anybody ever really care that it was called a Christmas tree? Did they?
I don't remember hearing anyone ever complain about it, but suddenly the most oversensitive of the democrats decided that it offends people to call it a Christmas tree, and changed the name.
WTF is a "holiday" tree? Do other late-December holidays that I'm not aware of also use an evergreen tree covered with lights as a symbol? What else is this tree representing here?
yeah i see no prob w/ xmas tree. it's more symbolic of the DAY rather than christ's supposed bday anymore.
when christianity is not the dominant religion of the US then those in power can put up whatever holidy iconography they wish, so long as it remains within the rights of others. simple really. dont see what the fuss is about.
No i agree with him. Its not a fucking holiday tree, its a Christmas tree.
If you dont like Christian things, dont live in a prodominantly Christian country!!!
Politically correctness is gash.
Where were you when the West was defeated?

"The celebration of a certain person that may or may not be related to a fictional/non fiction event in the past tree" is better...

I don't care if they put up a holiday symbol on the White House lawn for every religion that has a holiday around Christmas - but taking the word Christmas out of a purely Christmas symbol to keep others from being offended is ridiculous.
All holidays might offend Jehova's Witnesses, so should we just stop publicly recognizing all holidays?
They're skipping the true agenda. There should be no capitol tree of any sorts. It condones religion...bad, bad, bad!
Nah, seriously I think the government should recognize religions (and the lack thereof) during religious holidays...all of them. Its a fucking christmas tree, just like a menorah is a menorah, and not a "holiday candle thingy". I think government buildings should set up equal displays of all practiced faiths if they are going to do any, but keep them in the context of those faiths. In the christmas display they should call it a christmas tree. In the jewish display they should call it a menorah, and they should just have "nice looking tree with fake snow on it" for athiests.
No one is demading Menorahs be name neutralized.
I've even notice decorations are being deChristianized this year.
The persecution is getting rediculous
THey even are trying to force an UPSIDE DOWN CHRISTMAS TREE ON THE PUBLIC THIS YEAR.
The AntiChrist is coming!

Moron alert!!!
Fox News - particularly Gibson - has been chiming on about the "War On Christmas" and "the evil Liberals wanting it removed from public display" for almost a year.
It's almost as funny as the Christian Right saying - in this day and age of Christian fundamentalism within the American power structure and a bible thumping President - that Christianity doesn't have any representation in government.
Just to be argue the other side of the fence is it fair to those that live in that country that don't beleive in the christian Christmas? How would you feel if Jew's suddenly felt like decorating an entire city with Hanukah's?
I mean it's fun to have the holiday's you know, it's a time when people spend their time with their families and friends and basicly have a good time and it's meant to be in good spirit, but, as soon as you add a little religion it spoils the goodness of the idea because it's not something offered freely but rather a form of advertising for religion. which is definitely offensive to someone like myself who happens ot be an atheist.
