arnie had a lot more luck with getting good directors.
remember seeing an interview with paul verhoeven where he described getting him to do reaction shots - rather than trying to get him to react to what was supposed to be happening, verhoven took the time to work out what he could pretend to react to that would actually fit with the scene.
so if the character's wife had just been brutally raped and killed, verhoeven would say "okay, you've run out of cigars and the only place you can get more is a jewish tobaccanist"
