Need a replacement video card

Post by Transient »

Well it turns out that I won't be getting quite as much cash as I thought I was, so my new PC wil have to wait. I do have a spare $250 or so for an interim video card, though. Anyone got suggestions for what I should get in that price range before I go hunting around for something?

Much appreciated.

I'm afraid to overclock. My case runs hot as it is. :(

BTW, my games get choppy with more particle effects and when there are more units on the screen (AI controlled or player controlled, doesn't matter). That's affected by my video card and not my processor, yes? Or is it not that simple to answer? :paranoid:

well yaeh I would guess an upgrade is in order but remember there aint much point in overdoing the whole graphics card thing cause you will be ultimately limited to the weakest component in the chain.....

IE if your CPU is a ghey 1.5 ghz PIII/IV :tear: theres not really much point getting a geforce 6800 GT/ultra since regardless of the resolution you will be processor limited.

Well that does make sense, and saves me $100. Maybe after I get a bit more funds I can use that saved money to get a new processor to go with the 6600GT.

Thanks guys!

I just a 2.4 Ghz pentium with 1 gig of ram cheap as dirt(read for free) and looking to upgrade my vidcard cause I can't see all the pretty shinny stuff availabe on dx9 I think I'd be going the 6600gt way as well.

ATi is releasing their next generation of mainstream GPUs very soon. I have no idea what the performance will be like, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's between the 6600GT and 6800GT. Might be worth waiting.

They are to be announced in 36 hours, so we'll have more info on them then.

Oh yeah, that's right. I'll wait a bit to see if prices drop. I won't be getting much use out of the card for another month or so anyway, so I can deal with waiting.

I think my ATI x700 Pro was a great value. I can max out D3 and HL2.

Mine is made by ATI though.
