Which platform?
Dont think like that. Outdoor areas use a combination of ambient lighting (noShadows) and deluxe maps, with very few pointlights, which mean that the outdoor area will be bright but at the same time, normals look poor. (Resulting in some awful looking faces so far).Eraser wrote:I'll probably get shit framerates, but I refuse to play a game like Quake4 on a console.
The frame rate for the most part should be better than Doom 3.

Like I said. The game uses a combination of different tricks for the outdoor and MP levels.r3t wrote:I hope they did a good job optimizing the (lighting on the) multiplayer maps. The stock Doom 3 MP maps run pretty shitty for me, but there are some custom maps that look just as good but on which I get very good framerates.
Firt of all, it uses something called "deluxe mapping". What this is, is a pre-generated lightmap for the level, that has normals information too. If you were to load a level up with a deluxe map, you would see that it looks exactly the same as Doom 3. Then, anything that needs to move, or any lights etc that wont be static, will be computed in real time. This makes the gameplay a lot faster. It also uses tiny, smaller pointlights and heavy use of ambient lighting. Point lights (just lights), are heavily fillrate bound, and so the smaller they are, the better, but the smaller they are, the less shadow you get (hence the lack of shadows in the Q4 MP pics/vids, and the small ones too). Ambient lighting in a PPL engine like Quake 4 is jsut a piontlight that doesn't change the specular map, and doesn't cast shadows (making it VERY fast).
This means that when you play Quake 4, it will look a bit flat in some places, because ambient lights light the normals directly from the front. But it will be fast.
Couple this with the fact per poly hit detection has gone for online play, and an improved netcode, as well as dozens of other tweaks, and you can be sure Quake 4 MP will be smooth, much much smoother than Doom 3 at least.

This is exactly the kind of post i was on about:

can i run this game on high?"

Err, well according to SOAPBoy here:

The 6600GT 'doesn't cut it'.
So I think you're making a naive assumption that everyone with a good PC really knows what their hardware is capable of.

Hopefully by the release date, I'll be running this
Athlon64 3500+
NForce4
1gb
GeForce 6800 Ultra, o/c (PCI-E)
with 5.1 surround.
I know that's a heck of a rig, but are we really sure that Q4 isn't going to hammer it anyway? The game is trimmed down a lot compared to D3, but that's not really saying much at all.

Dude that should be fine. Why do people always think they need the latest 7900XTX gfx and 5GHz cpu's to play new games? I dunno about you, but for mp I don't play higher than 1024x768 (and q3 I play at 800x600). Your rig will easily get 80+fps in q4 mp, with medium to high details.R00k wrote:Hopefully by the release date, I'll be running this
