my old first gen yellow sports walky from the 80's took very heavy outdoor abuse for prolly bout 6-7 years before it died.

it got dropped onto concrete from 6ft plus many times and kept going.

cant remember what the final goodbye was from

i felt it had really preformed tho yes

It doesn't scream "design classic" in the same way as the iPod though.

There's no way Sony are ever going to go for direct recording, 'cos as far as they're concerned, that's tantamount to piracy. I thnk they've covered radio in their bean or whatever it's called.

AAC's a good format for low bitrate files, but I agree it's fairly pointless to try to get too much quality out of it. Lossless codec files are a bit tough to fit on an MP3 player, though; I have Lullabies to Paralyze in apple lossless format on my iPod and it sounds great, but skips near the end of the longest track.

i agree that .aac is nice at LOW bitrates (<128kbps), but you're tied to using just a handful of players.
