Weird. It keeps shutting down on me. Netstat I mean. First time it was up 2-3 seconds, now it just shuts down right after I got it up.

Instant messages are routed through MSN's servers. Even using any of the above solutions you won't get the IP of the other person unless you use voice, video, or file transfer.

IMs are [mostly -- see below], but file transfers are direct to the IP.
in MSN6 this option is enabled by default, and i suspect is only put into affect if the person is directly contactable, and not behind a firewall or the like.
edit: for the unsharp, it's third option down, "Allow me to connect directly..."

thats why he suggested to send a file before using netstat
