msn messenger, finding a users ip

my mates bird has had her account stolen. passwords been changed, need to track down stuff. any ideas? been googling for hours

send a file, while sending run>cmd>netstat
Look for anything out of the ordinary

Start -> run -> "cmd"

Then type in "netstat"

Weird. It keeps shutting down on me. Netstat I mean. First time it was up 2-3 seconds, now it just shuts down right after I got it up.

You need to run it INSIDE an instance of the command prompt. It won't stay open otherwise.

Instant messages are routed through MSN's servers. Even using any of the above solutions you won't get the IP of the other person unless you use voice, video, or file transfer.

I think if you install Trilian you should see their ip.

IMs are [mostly -- see below], but file transfers are direct to the IP.

in MSN6 this option is enabled by default, and i suspect is only put into affect if the person is directly contactable, and not behind a firewall or the like.

edit: for the unsharp, it's third option down, "Allow me to connect directly..."
