None of this MEANS anything.

That tech demo of the spidey 2 guy looked fantastic. Not AMAZING, but fantastic none the less for real time.

HOWEVER. I remember Cid in the PS2 emotion engine tech demo videos, and he also looked "fantastic".

Its easy to put all this detail into a face when its just a FACE, but when its in a game world with loads more people onscreen and lots more going on, dont expect to be seeing this.

This all reminds me of those NVidia techdemos for the GF1 and 2, showing per pixel lighting and fancy effects on fishes and animals and so on. And they "promised" we'd see those things in games very soon. But it took years before it actually popped up in games at all.
o'dium is right in that its easy to do one character's head with exceptional detail, but filling a complete scene with that amount of detail is something entirely different.

Unfortunatly not, no. ES3 does look large in scale and impressive in detail, but against the PS3 it looks like a cartoon.

Thjis doesn't make me happy. I've loved the x-box for many years now and hated the ps2, but now M$ have really dropped the ball and i fear a lot of devs would rather play with the PS3...

It wouldn't matter at all to me, because i'll get both anyways. Its just bad because the PS3 looks to have the worst pad in the history of gaming...

something completely different: it occured to me that there are a good number of FPS games announced for both the Xbox360 and the ps3... but where are the mouse-like controllers? I STILL can't play an FPS with a controller, and the whole experience is ruined for me because of that. I tried to learn it, but just can't get the hang of it... Thoughts?

It will be many years... I'm sure games will tap into it in parts, and the eye toy will probably use it because its a fast, closed off scene, but dont expect ot be playing killzone 2 and have that kind of interaction. Not to that degree anyways.

Both consoles have USB built it. The ps2 let you stick in ANY USB mouse and keyboard and play games with it.

I know because i completed UT on the PS2 this way.

So, it will probably offer this.

obviously, but the fact that water is now no longer a brush with a texture and shaders, but an actual "body of water" is quite amazing innit.

like all tech demo's, they arent to let us know what we'll be seeing in games, they just show us the possibilities and potential such an engine has.

for someone who claims to be (or desperatly wants to be) "in the biz", you really look at things totally wrong :) but i still wub you anyways

You forget that I've seen tech demos and used played this with in real time for a few years now ;) Just seeing it run that smooth with that quality is superb, but how many games will be set in a 4x4 foot room with just a bath tub :p

You wont be getting this for games no matter how nice it is. You may get it in games liek eyetoy, or smaller gimic games, but like i aid, games that are huge wont have this much detail thrown into the water for a while. Unreal Engine 3 has this and it runs VERY slow when you add it into the mix with other conditions.

So no, from somebody who "wants to be in the biz" im looking at this the right way. Its nice to look and wow over, its very smooth that PS3 can do this, but the chances of seeing water and faces this detailed (Remember we have had sud surface scattering and HDR for a good while now) is slim, because of just how much power it sucks out of your game. If it was ever going ot be used it would be late in the ps3's life when they have unlocked ALL the power, but as a launch titles its just to much of a risk to have the game run really slow.

Valve did that face trick with HL2.
They showed pics of the GMan's face's detail and acted like every face in the game was like that. In the end it turned out that the face was used for a minute or so in full close up for the introduction of the game.

But they DID use that for HL2. Its not like HL2 had anything fancy going on, just simple lighting with complex face movement on a high poly mesh. Wow. Hl2's gman movies were ALL how the final game turned out. Every person in the game looked the same as that movie. Know why you didn't notice? Because while in the game, lighting was everywhere, not set up JUST for the persons face.

So, in the end it turned out like a waste of time, because you cant even tell. But believe me, HL2's "gman" video is nothing but a shit smear compared to these movies (doc ock).

Some people might recognize the forest background used in the face demo from ATI's Radeon 9700 HDR demo

it's just an HDRI probe... used in many test aps. kinda like how this texture ( http://www.brandonfurtwangler.com/paral ... allax2.JPG ) is used in friggin heaps of shader tests. (Just image google 'parallax mapping') :P

Even though that water scene may have been a controlled environment... the implications for design are huge! Imgine tying this in with an RPG or something... it doens't need to be "seamless" with the world... but perhaps you need to use the eye toy to mix a potion correctly at a certain part of a level. I'm very eager to see where innovation goes with these sort of tech!
