The Last Guardian

Post by Don Carlos »

It's released tomorrow :D

It's out on the 7th in the UK and I'm very much looking forward to trying it out, and weeping like a little child during it.

Anyone else taking the plunge?

I thought that looked rather cool but then I haven't played any of the new games so don't have anything to measure that up too. I'm still stuck in playing Q3, *LOL* and not even that in sometime

I think it's a lovely looking game - the animations are incredible.

The places I trust to review games properly have said it's brilliant. I will wait to make my own judgement but the signs are positive.

I'm excited :D

More than half of that is playernoobness. Standing on a ledge calling the dog, then get knocked off? Imagine that!

Well I love both Ico and Shadows of the Colossus, so I was always bound to give this the time it deserves.

The only "clunky" mechanics I have found are sometimes the camera does a weird this so you need to move about to reset it, and Trico can be a little unpredictable, which is part of his charm. He doesn't just follow a linear path when you get a puzzle, he does his own thing and you kind of have to wait for him at times. Those who have cats will instantly recognise the trait, which as far as I am concerned has been built into the game. And if they haven't been, well I think it lends itself very well to how I would think a young cat/dog/bird/griffin hybrid thing would react to the situations he is put in.

But I will agree it does feel like it needs more optimisation - sometimes the frame rate can drop into single figures when you deploy certain mechanics. But then the game as a whole is incredibly beautiful. I could stand still and gaze at the expanses for ages.

I don't want to play a game to wait and see if it's going to cooperate with me, especially if it's going to do it when it damn well pleases.

From a performance perspective, the bottom line is this. The only option available to PlayStation gamers in getting a regularly smooth 30fps is to use PlayStation 4 Pro, running at 1080p. If you're on a regular PS4 you're in for a very variable experience; lurching between 20-30fps just by running around empty areas, and with stutters to over 110ms. All playthroughs have full v-sync, and there are thankfully no frame-pacing issues at 30fps, but sadly playing The Last Guardian on a standard PS4 easily gives the worst performance of all three options.

Damn, for the first time I feel like I want a PS4. Still haven't played through Ico and SotC though. I think I'll give Ico another go.
