How can the US have a city in anarchy after 5 days?

Post by Foo »

I guess I'll be told 'this doesn't deserve its own thread'. Fuck off, this is only indirectly regarding the hurricane.

How is it that nearly 5 days after this hurricane hit, the US can have a city out of control, flooded 10+ feet deep in water, with no electricity, no water, no gas, people on the ground desperate for food and water, police stranded on the ground without radios, police and rescue workers being shot and wounded..... I'll stop now.

Point is, how can this happen to 'the most advanced' nation in the world? Especially since there was warning of the severity days in advance? Just seems unbeleivable. Do you think there was incompetence at play here, and who's responsibility was it? Could the detection, preparation or recovery have been managed any better than it was?

EDIT: Oh BTW source for all this is variously: Live video feeds, audio feeds (including FEMA and the state OES radio channels), blogs, photos, eyewitness interviews, news reports. In that order.

It's because the US isn't as civilized as you believe. Sure, they seem normal at first, but then again their nation is only like 400 years old at best (I'm including the colony years). Deep inside, they're all savages.

i heard money that was to be spent on the levees was diverted to fund the war in iraq in 04 huzzah!

most that stayed in the city didnt have the means to get out either because of disablity, age or financial hardships. if you know nothing of what it's like to live in an impoverished community you won't understand. everyday is life and death to most. this is just speeding up that process. it would be unwise to think this can't happen anywhere else.

"The New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bracing for a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding. . . the largest single-year funding loss ever . . . I've been here over 30 years and I've never seen this level of reduction, said Al Naomi, project manager for the New Orleans district. I think part of the problem is it's not so much the reduction, it's the drastic reduction in one fiscal year. . . . The cuts mean major hurricane and flood protection projects will not be awarded to local engineering firms. Also, a study to determine ways to protect the region from a Category 5 hurricane has been shelved . . . the New Orleans district, which employs 1,300 people, instituted a hiring freeze last month . . . the first of its kind in about 10 years. . . One of the hardest-hit areas of the New Orleans district's budget is the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project. . . designed to improve drainage in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Tammany parishes. SELA's budget is being drained from $36.5 million awarded in 2005 to $10.4 million suggested for 2006 by the House of Representatives and the president."

Everything I've seen on tv showcased middle to lower class citizens dealing with the disaster. Don't know how hard the rich folk been hit but they could prolly fly off into their second homes anyway.

People were told to evacuate, People are too stupid to listen. If it were me? I would have gone to an Island somewhere and baked in the sun until it was clear to go home. :)

Bulk buy rice from china town. A 5 quid bag can give you 2 meals a day for months.

Yes, … in a 2-quart microwave-safe dish combine 2 cups of water and 1 cup of rice. Cover and microwave on HIGH for 5 minutes. Reduce setting to 50% power, microwave for 15 minutes or until all the water is absorbed. If your microwave does not have variable power settings, follow the manufacturer's directions. Also, it is not recommended to cook more than 1 cup of uncooked rice in the microwave.

Google is your friend.
