Hybrid cars and EMPs
Hybrid cars and EMPs
I'm thinking about buying a Prius, but it just struck me... When China invades, am I going to be able to use it to get out of town, after they set off an EMP?
That's my e-mail to a local Toyota dealer. The reply should be interesting.

Anything that would stop working if you held a BIG magnet right next to it will stop working during an EMP.
Unfortunately, that's any IC I can think of.
Simple circuits are unnafected. For example, your basic torch would still keep working.
There are generally 3 levels of EMP attack. Weak attacks take electronics offline for a short period. Medium attacks take things down and also destroy magnetically held data (hard drives, tape backups) Strong attacks can outright destroy an IC circuit by generating enough voltage via magnetic pulse to blow the circuits.

This is correct and makes entirely too much sense. Then again, we have to consider the source of the question. Sometimes I relate to it as talking to a slice of bread.Psyche911 wrote:But, all current cars use an ECU. If the ECU is destroyed, wouldn't any car be just as dead as the Prius? I think so. So it doesn't really matter. Just more of the Prius would need to be replaced in order to run again.

But bread goes stale over time. Where as rep is always demonstrating fresh evidence of why he's a cunt.raw wrote:This is correct and makes entirely too much sense.
