ENGLAND: Whats the Best Way to Learn to Drive?

Post by Mr.Magnetichead »

I really need to pull my finger out and learn to drive. What would be the best way to first go about passing my theory test? Please, if you have experience of learning to drive from the past few years tell me what you went through to learn and how it turned out in the end.

Your mother then, or maybe your father. Whichever will cause you more emotional damage from visualisation.

Theory tests are easy, they're pretty much just common sense.

Theres loads of literature about you can use, just read through it and remember. A lot of it is just facts, do, dont, limit for this, limit for that, what do these signs mean etc....

Don't sweat the theory. Driving to a sufficient skill level to pass your test, that's the harder part.

I suggest going out in the car with a parent for as long as you feel you're still learning from it (get on their insurance then drive them everywhere you can).

Once you've driven so much on the cheap under your parents' supervision, start taking quality driving lessons.

aye, and pick up the CDs if you can. they're only a tenner or something.

the theory test is a doddle, and it doesn't cost much if you need to retake it. there's no harm in starting lessons at the same time, if anything they'll help the theory sink in.

ask folks where you live if they can recommend an independent instructor and you'll stand a better chance of getting a good one than if you went to the aa or rac.

edit:
you should be fine then, just don't let them bore you to death :)

You're asking on a forum where the majority are American, who'se driving test is stupidly easy :p.

But er yea, do as everyone else said- theory = easy, real test = harder.

But when you've passed you can forget 90% of what you learned to pass your test and drive propperly. I'd never pass my test again, I never use the "10 to 2" hand grip, I tend to just use the 3 o'clock one.

In Ohio we have to take a written test to get our permit. Then we have to attend 1 week worth of classes. After that we have to drive with a teacher for 8 hours. Then we are supposed to drive 50 hours with our parents. Then our vehicle is inspected and finally you are allowed to take the test.

You can start the process 6 months before you 16th birthday. If you wait until after you are 18 I think you just take the two tests.

What!? Ohio is on crack..

In Florida, you go down take your test at 15 for a learners permit and this will allow you to drive with anyone over 18. At 16 you take another test and get your regular permit. Easy.

Both times you take a written and a driving test.

Personally, I took my car down to Beachy Head and drove off. Worked wonders for me, passed first time. Why not try it?

For me, the hardest part about passing my test was choosing which car to buy myself once I'd passed first time after only 9 lessons.

Hope this helps.

We can drive with someone over 18 with a permit but we still have to do the other stuff.
