I think id's lost their touch and have burned out like so many have. If the gaming industry had a spot on the VH-1 has-been shows, id'd be on there.
Thanks for your patronage.

the video looks like q3 with some improved graphics..
I can still play q3 now, it doesn't look fresh enough..
Why bring back jump pads!! Q2 had no jump pads..
It looks just like q3.. pfft it's crap

make engine. add minimal content. "lets see. new total-vram-whore-of-an-engine? check. rocket launcher? check. shotgun which can kill any enemy in the game with 2 shots? check. right boys, lets wrap it up and sell it!"

I still play Q2 and Q3 single player. Why? Because the game code itself rocked and the engine was the second emphasis. I'm tired of good eye candy, shitty performance, and no game content. I knew shit was going downhill for id when Q3's AI sucked cock. I mean shit, I have Q2 bots which will smoke all Q3 bots and the sad part is, it was written by the same person.MKJ wrote:w3rd, sir w3rd.raw wrote:Nope, I've never even seen a Q4 screenshot yet. Q2 was where it was at. Q1 lacked detail, but Q2 made up for that and more.raw wrote:I still play Q2 and Q3 single player. Why? q3's gameplay is rocksolid, but the lazyness of the team just drips off of the walls. its like they created placeholders to test out their engine and then, when it all worked, didnt feel like replacing them with actual models.
the bouncy map? 3 textures in a box :icon14: gg
the menu? centered text and floating bubble-buttons :icon14: :icon14:

I rather agree with raw, id seems to have lost their "touch". That doesn't mean that they're not able to make a great comeback, however unlikely.
But remember that it's not only id that has changed. The entire industry, along with the technology, is no longer the same as back in id's golden era.
Plus, we are all older and more cynical now, and that pink, fuzzy feeling that accompanies the nostalgia of thinking about how it was playing games "back in the day" won't make things better either.

The problem is that with current gen games, you need a much larger team, and id refuse to do this. They want to stay in their small 3 man army of death, and while that worked for games that took less than a year to make, it just doesn't work now.
This means that games like doom 3 are easier for them to do, because there just isn't anything there they HAVE to do.
Take a look at Epic. They are working on Gears Of War, Unreal Tourny 2007, and loads more not talked about. They can do this AND pump in massive detail into their engines, because they looked at the work load and did the right thing; Expanded.
As long as id refuse to expand, thye will NEVER make games as good as we want. Its amazing they got Doom 3 out of the door in the state they are in. (Which, was not good. Doom 3 was far far better in the E3 days, then went down hill, then Trent added his sounds and he went up again, then, he left with his sounds and went down hill again. See what a different a good sound guy makes?)
Maybe id will expand in the future, maybe not. But until then, they will NEVER get that old shine back.
