A 14-year-old boy who went into cardiac arrest after he was zapped by a Chicago Police stun gun had not threatened police or anyone else before he was shocked, four eyewitnesses to the February incident say.
The developmentally delayed boy was sitting on a couch in a juvenile home and was not attempting to harm anyone, the witnesses claim in sworn court depositions obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
After the boy went into convulsions and fell to the floor, the officer who used the Taser allegedly said, "Now look at this f-----' paperwork I've got to do,'' at least two witnesses claim in the depositions.

It shouldn't be used on a 14year old lad though.
Cardiac arrest isn't 'lethal as such'? My stance on this is still the same -- they should be used as if they were lethal, but as a substitute for a gun when possible, until they can find ways to make sure they will not permanently harm anyone.
As it stands right now, the effective gist of the policy is that, since it only harms or kills a very small percentage of people that it's used on, it must be safe for the general population simply because it isn't as deadly as a gun. That's extremely backwards IMO, and doesn't show the slightest respect for the lives of citizens. On top of that, these debates are serving to forward the idea that police officers can be judges and juries on the scene, and justified in whatever action they take because there may be a danger of them being injured in some way - even superficially in some cases.
christ you and eepberries need to get a fucking room and shout "IT'S ALWAYS AMERICA'S FAULT!" right before collapsing, spent in one anothers arms. It would be theraputic, i think.
o'dium wrote:r00k, I was comparing to a pistol. What would you rather be shot with, a gun or tazer?
I think they are using them more because they know the chance of them being less lethal is slim compared to a gun.
In more and more cases it's becoming obvious that they can be just as lethal as a gun. Therefore, they should only use tasers in situations where they would normally use a gun, as a safer alternative.

But it is all america's fault. Isn't america all "shoot first, shoot second, shoot a little bit more and then try and ask a question while shot dodging somebody else"?

I think that's just wrong. If a cop is called to throw someone out of a bar, should they just tase him to the ground and drag him out, instead of just throwing him out bouncer style, knowing that it could possibly kill him?

listen, you're making being armed to the teeth out to something always resulting in lethal endings. think of it like a swiss army knife, you got all yer tools in one handy little unit--when packing heat, you'll never need a ladder to get that pesky cat down, you don't need a doorbell to announce your presence, who in america uses turn signals? shoot the front tire of the guy next to you and voila! one empty lane. I mean, really.
o'dium wrote:How about "not shoot anyody, not taze anybody, sort the situation out without violence"??
not a fucking chance.
tasers should be used instead of guns, as a way to bring down someone who is threatening someone elses life, not as an alternative to wrestling someone to the floor and cuffing them.
i thought the police were trained how to restrain someone, what sort of pussy needs a taser on a 14yr old kid?

What will it be?
I've met plenty "normal guy" Americans at work here in the Netherlands. Sure some to most of them over there are overweight, but that's a problem more countries are facing these days.

i think the fact that it was major fucking news, shows exactly how rare it is for the police to shoot someone, let alone an innocent man (who was running away, after being told to stop by armed police) is in the UK.
I wonder how many people have been shot by police in the UK, compared to other countries where the police seem a little more happy to draw their gun...

If you are brazilian and living in london in the middle of a major anti-terrorist campaign, make sure you run away from any armed police you might see, because the guns they have are just for show, they wouldnt consider using them.
