Its the HL way of things. Its a smart way really, but yes, a little soar on the eye.phantasmagoria wrote:[lvlshot]http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/209/reviews/531883_20050729_screen003.jpg[/lvlshot]
Why are Raven insisting on using pathetically low res textures when they know how gash they looked in Doom3? that gun looks utter trash
You have two weapons. Your first person, and your world. The first person obviously contains far more detail, because it "can", its optimized in a way so that unseen polies are not even on the mesh. The low poly model is made simply because it has to be, and so its made for the world. It has to be low poly, otherwise when you will clutter the level up with loads of higer poly weapons and ammo, which can bog down older systems.
In Quake 3 this wasn't a problem. Quake 3 used a tag based system which meant that the detail on the first person weapon was the detail on the world weapon; Because they were the same mesh. Now, you get the chance of drawing two models, so ones made lower poly.
I obviously agree with this for performance reasons, itsa good call. But yes, it DOES look very poor on the eye, almost as if the detail level is even lower than very very old games

i thought quake2's weapons looked great, with divers idle and reload animations.
much better than quake3's :icon19:
these look quite generic, IMO. like the usual run-of-the-mill spacemarine assault gun
