This is a painting.

I have no idea how Dru does it. His aviation illustrations are classic, but certainly not as complicated as this. I've seen how he works and believe it or not, he just has a reference photo somewhere near the canvas...

I haven't read up on his history, but he may have come from the airbrush/black velvet fad movements. For example, the airbrush movement was when the fad of airbrushing hit the public and little shops appeared in malls where you could buy an airbrushed shirt or portrait. The more money you spent, the more realistic or complex the result. A lot of people who worked at these shops were teenagers who were taught the craft in the blink of an eye.Somehow they managed to produce high quality representations of the subject they were illustrating. Airbrushing is relatively easy, but it teaches you the fundamentals of shading techniques in a full throttle, smash mouth way. When the fad bubble burst, there were a lot of people who knew how to produce high quality paintings in a short time.

Many are doing cover illustrations for books. Of course, this could be totally unrelated to Dru Blair.

Please don't levelshot. Levelshot is an enabler for cheap asses who don't want to move out of their parent's basements, get a job, and buy a real monitor that can display over 320x240. More importantly, it'll fuck up the image.

Edit: "He later found employment in Myrtle Beach, SC. as an airbrush artist painting shirts." LOL, I was right.

This is his most famous painting, "Power."

Since 1989 it's been the most popular aviation print.

assuming it really is a drawing, it was obviously based on a live model or a photograph of one -- in which case, it's completely pointless. Why not just take a picture if you're not going to put any "art" in your artwork?

Painting that would be like waiting for your big announcement, rep, or hoping your super duper part of the PTM project would actually get completed, or trying to make clear to you that the biggest something of a certain month is not necessarily one of the 12 biggest things of the whole year -- useless.

What the fuck are you TALKING about. Artists almost always work from references. Any artist who acts like he's "too good" for references is a fucking moron and is never going to make it far.

I belive the style is called photorealism. I'm not much of a fan of it, but there are some very nice pieces out there.

edit: I remember now that my favorite piece featured a heinz ketchup bottle sitting on a table. The painter even added the camera off-focus effect to the surrounding background.

Art is subjective.

This kind of "art" is well recognized world wide by people that are educated in the field.

The Germans came up with some wonderful words for stuff like this, like 'kitsch' and 'unkultur'.
