it's called a bone spur. It's made up of cartiledge. When I asked my doctor about the one I have she said to slam a book down on it and break it.

I've had a small thing like that on the top knuckle of my middle finger for a few years. It actually hurts on occasion. I really need to find myself a new doctor and start going again.

It looks like a cyst to me, simple operation to remove it, they just give you a local and take it out of there. They have to take it out whole, if they leave any little piece of it in there, it'll come back.
