Finally trying rook's chili

killer chili recipe:

2 lbs ground beef
1 beer - preferably a strong one - only put half in the chili, drink the other half
3 cans red kidney beans
4 jalapenos, sliced to about 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick
2 cans tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
2 tbsp crushed red pepper
2 tbsp cumin
1 chopped white onion
1 packet generic chili powder
2 cloves crushed garlic (heat in microwave 10 seconds before peeling, much easier)
2 tsp fresh ground black pepper

put shredded cheddar cheese in the bottom of the bowl, chili on top, crush about 6-10 crackers into it, and stir thoroughly.

then get a kleenex and enjoy.
Just finished browning the meat, preparing the ingredients, and turned on the crock-pot. Wish I didn't have to wait so long to try this shit out but it looks like I'm gunna be eating it for a week.

Hopefully it turns out ok. We only had Bud Light (im not 21 yet), I used 2 jalapenos instead of 4, and I accidently put 1 tbsp of black pepper in so I cut the red pepper back to 1 tbsp. Also wasn't sure whether I needed cumin seed or ground cumin since I've never used the stuff (boy does it have a strong odor!).

It's a pretty expensive meal if you live alone and don't have the ingredients close by. It cost me $52 for all the supplies listed plus some extras to make it a dinner.

Glad you're trying it out, let me know how you like it.

It does make a lot. I've found that I can take half of the leftovers, put it in ziplock bags, and throw it in the freezer, and it's still good a week or two later when I've got the munchies. :)

It shouldn't hurt anything to have a little less red pepper, but halving the jalapenos might take a lot of the spice out of it.
For the cumin, you can use whichever type you want, but I tend to like the ground (powdery) cumin, since it mixes in better.

And feel free to experiment with the recipe - the best thing about chili is how easy it is to adapt the recipe to what you like. :icon14:

edit: And it might have cost you a little to get all the ingredients, but now that you have the spices you'll be able to make your next pot for 10 bucks or so. And that will give you 5 or 6 meals if you want it to. ;)

I know, but that's how it's called here.

It's been a long time since I made Chilli Con Carne. Next time I'll add some extra chillis

I'm a fan of chili con queso myself, but I can't make it. :tear:

Ha HA! I just made it yesterday! I cut the ingrediants all in half, though and it still made enough for me to eat for the next three days. I used Guinness because that's all I had on hand, but it made it excellent. I've made it once with Newcastle and once with Spaten, too and the Spaten was great. I also add some curry powder for a slightly different flavor. All in all, a top notch recipe.

52$ ?!?!?

that sounds pretty expensive for a chili.

let's see what i'd pay for it:

2 lbs ground beef ~ 8€
1 beer ~ 1,50€
3 cans red kidney beans ~ 2€
4 jalapenos ~ 2€
2 cans tomato sauce
+ 1 can diced tomatoes ~ 1,50 €
1 chopped white onion ~ you should allways have onions at home
1 packet generic chili powder ~ 2€

that's 17€... that should be around 32$

maybe you paid 52$ because you had to buy some of the spices.

btw: you need grounded cumin, no seeds.

and you could add a knife point of cinnamon to adjust the taste ( this goes for nearly every tomato sauce)

Yeah it was around $30 for the chilli but I had to buy everything on the list (no I don't need onions and no I didn't have the spices). But like I said I bought other shit to complete the meal like fresh bread, chips, 12 pack of pepsi, and fresh cookies for dessert.
