I think oddly enough, programs like photoshop can import pdf files.

I know my art program (ACDSee Canvas) can.

acrobat is obsolete, its just "adobe reader" now, and besides, why would you seek an alternative way to go, whats wrong with it?

I directed you to the office apps section there are a few CLEAN PDF reader and writers in there.

Acrobat 7.0 carefully downloaded is pretty good, not as bloated as 6.o is. Just avoid the toolbars and yahoo crap.

Yup, here is a good 7.x download of reader that has the bloatware stripped out.
