I always wonder what to think about things like this. There's all this serious scary talk about influencing public opinion and everything, and I don't want to just dismiss that as fear mongering or something, but at the same time, both Google and Facebook seem to be so incompetent at what they're doing that they are even unable to present me with ads that are actually relevant to me.

That's because they don't decide what ads you see. They only provide target groups to ad agencies who then decide to bombard you with whatever ad they (the agency) decides is 'relevant'. Which it is often not but they prefer volume of relevance anyway.

Multiple governments are demanding briefings with Facebook, and they're having an all-staff meeting about Cambridge Analytica. I'm glad I deleted my Facebook account back in 2010. They just can't stay out of the news with their slimy bullshit.

I still have Facebook, rarely venture there and I haven't written to it (and stopped others writing to it) in years so it seems like a good idea to delete the account
I have an ad blocker on my normal FF browser but when I use another browser if only briefly, those supposedly targeted ads start appearing :disgust: What do I want with an expensive tactical flashlight for goodness sake?
