Cold? Yeah, but the summers in central and southern Finland are lovely. If you don't like snow and winter, then it's not for you.
Remote? Not in the least bit, but it's nice to be able to get away to a quiet cottage by the lake without having to drive 5 hours.
Full of dense forests? You say that like it's a bad thing.
Depressive alcoholics? Yeah, but on par with the UK according to global statistics.

I was 10. Dad was offered a job in Canada and despite all his degrees, had a tough time finding a senior architect position in Finland so we all moved. My brother was nearly 18 at the time so he moved back quickly and is now a GP and married in Helsinki. Parents are now retiring and plan to sell their house within the next year so they too can move back. My girlfriend likes it here though and I don't blame her, she moved from Ukraine at 17. She's never seen Finland so we plan to do a bit of Nordic traveling in the next couple years. If she likes it, we'll move in a heartbeat

Honestly, the weather is fairly mild in the capital region. The climate has changed remarkably in the last decade or so too, I don't think Helsinki saw any snow last year.
