I dunno, I gave up on DS1 after playing it for an hour because it was so mind numbingly stupid.

playing DS1 now that it's backcompat. I get it, though I'm powering through it more than anything else.

the atmosphere is yummy though. I like me some gloom :)

I've always found the DS games to have a certain graphical style that can look cheap at times but if that's what you're looking for in a DS game I think you're looking for the wrong game. The gameplay is usually where this game shines.

I've played and finished all the DS series so I'll definitely be picking this up.

It's not for everyone. I love the atmosphere in those games and the way the story is told is ace. No cutscene bullshit and the levels tell most of the story if you're paying attention and the gameplay is punishing but rewarding and doesn't unfairly punish you. When you die in a DS game you fucked up somewhere.

That was actually my main gripe with Dark Souls 1. Too often the game resorted to cheap tricks to get me killed. Cheap tricks that were easily avoided once you knew where they were, but it completely ruined the fun for me.

What I hate about the Dark Souls community is that they have this elitist attitude where they say "oh, if you don't like the DS games then it's probably not for you" with an undertone of "play easier games because this game is too hard for you". Thing is, I don't dislike hard games that provide a challenge. Not at all. I do dislike games that leave you with the feeling that the game fucked you over rather than a clear understanding of where I fucked up myself.

I like how you can walk through a random door and a rock falls on your head instantly killing you as if you should've known it was there. Too many things in this game punish you the first try forcing you to memorize by trial and error.

These games are only challenging because of the shit controls and PS2 graphics. Seems only lifeless nerds enjoy them.

Pretty much this.

Scrubs who can't handle Dark Souls should probably just stick to Mario Party. Get good or die tryin'

It has to be said, I just don't think I am a hardened gamer any more. I like pick up and play stuff; DriveClub, Trackmania Turbo, a 10 minute game of Quake Live...games like that. I don't have the time or the want to really be involved with games any more...which is weird.

Uncharted being slightly different as Lady Carlos loves playing that too, so we play once or twice a week...we are going through the Uncharted collection before 4 comes out :)

But yeah, DS games are just not for me. Neither is anything that requires you to sink in 60+ hours to get the story...so Fallout, Witcher and the like.

Ok, you died to something you didn't see coming. You could just bitch about it and be a huge pussy or you could learn from it. For me, it was the rolling boulder that comes flying down the stairs near the start of DS1. Yeah it got me too. However there's a lesson to be learned when that happens to you. You either don't learn it and go on to bitch about how ridiculous this game is or you quickly realize not all cues in this game are visual. I didn't get mad when I died to the rock because I heard it coming. I knew, that I'd heard it and I knew what it was yet I stood on the stairs like an idiot and got killed for it.

From that point forward when I play a souls game I know to listen and look and I react accordingly. When I feel like something is a trap, I proceed cautiously. It's supremely satisfying to avoid a trap on your first run through that you didn't previously know was there. The problem with gamers like you is that you've become too soft. You expect to have a gigantic waving flag of a warning when shits about to go down with super easy combo controls that pretty much make games a glorified movie with inputs. Don't get me wrong either, sometimes a good story is all a game needs to be enjoyable and there's nothing wrong with that... Unless you let those games dictate what's considered good and bad games to yourself. Dark Souls is a punishing game only if you refuse to change and simply don't learn from your mistakes.

I will say this though, if you're going to give dark souls a try, I'd recommend starting with #2. It's far easier than #1 was but just as enjoyable and it isn't the difficulty that makes the souls game fun, it's the game itself. Combat, story, atmosphere and even the characters in the game are incredibly well done.

I started with DS2 - had no idea what I was getting into. Hated it until I figured the mechanics out. Bloodborne was next - one of my all time favorite games. Just finished the final boss on the DLC a couple weeks ago.

Started DS3 yesterday. Great so far.

Oh, and hi everyone!

I picked DS1 up in the bargain bin - had been playing through the updated DS2 on the PS4 as well. Even though DS2 is definitely a PS3 era looking game on the PS4 - 60 FPS is nice though - I had forgotten how rough around the edges DS1 was until starting it up. If I have the time I'll be giving it a full go - but with the next Witcher DLC on the horizon, Uncharted 4 due out soon as well, and me still trudging through DS3 - with only about 30 minutes of free time a day, I've got enough games ahead of me for the next couple years.

Did you finish Bloodborne and the DLC, Memph? If so, how did you like it?
