hi
My Quake 2 for some reason runs extremly slow and choppy in OpenGL.
however, when i use quake 2 evolution, it runs flawlessly and i'm pretty sure that's openGL too. no??
ive reinstalled but it doesn't fix.
ive got the latest patch too.
any suggestions?

You are probably using the wrong renderer under video options - it should be default opengl instead of 3dxf blabla or powervr opengl or whatever else is in there. q2e chooses the right render automatically for you. :)

quake2.exe (actually ref_gl.dll) has issues with newer ATi drivers and maybe NVIDIA as well. You could downgrade your drivers but that'll have a negative impact on the performance of more modern day engines (like Q2E or EGL).

Do you have ATI? Now that you mention it, there was a thread on q2 (at raws forum) where raw had a similar problem with slowdowns. There was a console command to fix it I think. This was with vanilla q2. I don't remember it though. It might of been mjrpes that also knew it or suggested it. Paging mjrpes, paging mjrpes.

I don't think it was me, because I've never really played q2. I did have a choppiness problem with q3 after installing a new vid card (going from ATI -> nvidia), and I got that problem solved by reinstalling windows.

hmm i've checked that. actually i keep it on 120. i don't know what it caps at in Q2, but i keep it there just cause.
i have my FPS drawn and it ranges from 20-40.

If you're using the original quake2.exe to play online you should be aware of a catch: the engine sends a snapshot to the server for every frame rendered. So it isn't too hard to flood your uplink. Most newer engines have fixed this, though.

I think it's set gl_ext_pointparameters "0". The default should be 1.

What's funny is I don't need to turn that off now that I have an Nvidia card again.
