A letter to Iran

Post by Ryoki »

Is anyone following this?

A few days ago all but 7 of the GOP senators tried to sabotage the Obama administrations negotiations with Iran again, this time by means of an open letter in which they promise to torpedo any deal currently struck in the future. It's been hilariously backfiring gigantically for them for two days now, the fracus just keeps increasing - the latest is that they might have actually broken the law by penning the letter. Oh sweet jesus, how funny would it be if nearly the entire GOP leadership went to jail for 3 years, or at least lost the right to hold office?

It's like Obama is playing 4 dimensional nuclear chess (between the leadership of Iran, the hardliners of Iran, his administration and the increasingly desperate GOP) and he's actually winning. The man is a Machiavellian superhero...

this follows on directly from Netanyahu's visit, during which he addressed Congress on Iran's 'nuclear threat'

Hanged is the proper term for hanging someone by the neck to die. GOD!

At any rate, I am curious to see how this 4D round of nuclear chess plays out

My personal theory is they've reached a critical mass of stupidity... a lot of stupid goes a long way in politics since it attracts the dumb voters - and as we all know there are a lot of those so it's initially quite rewarding. But it's a dangerous downward spiral, the more dumb you inject in your politcs the less intelligent are the elected officials you get and the more extreme are the views you have to defend - until they start doing things that are so overwhelmingly stupid that even stupid people take notice and think 'geez that might actually be real stupid, what the hell?'.

Also something about group think dynamics and GOP hubris - they haven't seemed to notice that the opinion on things like middle eastern wars has shifted quite radically the last decade or so.

Read somewhere that Obama got a 5% sympathy bump after the Bibi speech :olo: Wonder what the letter thing did for his approval ratings... he played it smart too, by basically keeping his mouth shut and avoiding cameras he's just about the only person who came out of it looking good. Bibi looks bad and is now actually in danger of losing his own election, the GOP looks terrible, AIPAC is not being taken as seriously anymore, etc. Fun times!

It seems that the GOP party line regarding the letter is now 'hey it was just some lighthearted fun you guys, why is everyone so mad?'. Idiots :)

Holding: While the Constitution does not explicitly say that all ability to conduct foreign policy is vested in the President, it is nonetheless given implicitly and by the fact that the executive, by its very nature, is empowered to conduct foreign affairs in a way that Congress cannot and should not.

Wrote Justice Sutherland:

It is important to bear in mind that we are here dealing not alone with an authority vested in the President by an exertion of legislative power, but with such an authority plus the very delicate, plenary and exclusive power of the President as the sole organ of the federal government in the field of international relations–a power which does not require as a basis for its exercise an act of Congress, but which, of course, like every other governmental power, must be exercised in subordination to the applicable provisions of the Constitution.

Maybe they really have broken the law?

Certainly looks like it! Nothing will come of it i'm sure, but the mere impression they might have broken the law for no good reason at all is politically very damaging.

Not to worry, we can leave it to the Democrats not to capitalize on this series of blunders in any way shape or form i wager :)

An interesting new development in the 4 dimensional nuclear game of chess:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/m ... i-in-yemen

Why give the the green light to go in and bomb stuff? To pressure Iran, that supports the Houthi's? To appease the Sunni regional allies who must begin to feel quite uncomfortable with the shift in the political landscape?

There's even talk of sending in hundreds of thousands of groundtroops by the collective militaries of every Sunni led nation. Jesus, that would something wouldn't it, the biggest invasion of a country by a multinational force since... the Korean war?

Questions questions in any case!
