There aren't any native games people would actually play on it. People have hacked good games like Alien: Isolation on it but they don't work 100%.

I understand this hololens is an augmented reality device? I think Carmack once said that AR has a whole new set of problems to overcome on top of the challenges they're facing with VR. So I don't know how successful this will be. Also, it's Microsoft, so in the eyes of the consumer it has the coolness factor of a brick wall.

You play 111 hours of computer games per fortnight, and you can't see the point of VR?

I think the point is that it's really immersive.

Everyone I've spoken to that has used Oculus has said it's incredible and takes gaming to the next level and then some.

I think it'll be a treat for the survival horror genre and racing games, but wasted on stuff like Bit.Trip.Runner and the like

It's definitely meant for first person view. Personally I can't wait to try occulus on GTA V. that shit would be amazing.

Even though VR is in the making for some decades now, these recent efforts seem to be well grounded. In the long run: AR.

Concerning games: My guess is that the first killer app (i.e. reaching not only gamers) will not be a fast paced, stressful game in the shooter genre but rather a comfy, slow paced exploration game with MMORPG elements - something like minecraft.

I'm wrapping, brewing and other shit that having an alt-tab and not a screen glued to one's face enables you to do. Thus reckoning I'd get fed-up with the limitations pretty quickly.

Then again, haven't tried it. Only assuming how I'd react once the back-step in visual fidelity sinks in and the novelty wears off.
I don't understand what you mean.. Why are you concerned about having senses impaired? If you're playing a computer game, you already have the most important sense impaired: your attention.

You are literally the only person I've ever met in four decades who doesn't like the idea of a completely immersive VR experience. People who use the Oculus say it's a game-changer.

World's Shittest Dad is right. The applications outside computer games are limitless. It's going to revolutionise communication, design, and a bunch of stuff I can't think of. I read a Wall Street guy's essay on it, and the applications he was mentioning made the device seem like a complete paradigm shift.

That I can go with. It's the gaming industry being able to actually make use of it in a non-shit way I can't see happening, outside of a few select titles.
Maybe outside the gaming industry, I won't hold my breath though, It's been done before.

I can't see it being difficult to implement for racing and flight/space sims which is honestly the reason I'd want one.

I think it's available for Assetto Corsa native, you could spend the money renting a GTI for a week though

I don't see gaming in a big-budget way taking off on them for quite some time. They are a very niche device and a lot of people get headaches and motion sickness on them. There aren't going to be big budget games exclusively for them in the near future.

The HoloLens made me think of the Lego 3D catalogue app. If you haven't tried it yet, see if you can find the most recent Lego catalogueand download the app for it.

Some models in the cataloguehave this AR icon next to them. Aim your phone's camera at it while running the app and it'll detect the AR icon and show an animated version of the model correctly superimposed over the camera view. It looks like it's actually moving over your desk or whatever. In the end it's sort of pointless, but really cool to see nonetheless.

Here's an example of what you see on your phone's display:

A few years back I was messing around with something called Goblin XNA that used MS XNA with ARTag markers and I thought that was cool as shit, was pretty easy to get what you wanted done but fiddling with the marker system could be a bit fiddly.

You didn't need that many markers either, I got it down to 2 or 3 so you could prolly get that game he's playing onto a paddle.

Haw, that's a good idea actually - call it a FaceHugger and gift a free copy of the latest Alien game with every purchase.
