the Sony Pictures Ent. hack/leak

Post by Ferrao10 »

A Breakdown and Analysis of the December, 2014 Sony Hack for now, still ongoing.
No thread up here jet for this massive clusterfuck?
It sure looks like this is going to hurt them. Badly.
But who are those GOP and what do they want? They come over as a bunch of 15 year olds, yet the scope of their mission and the way they pursue it is just fucking brutal.
Maybe of interest to some guys around here is The Croner Animation and Visual Effects Survey, the benchmark survey of the animation and visual effects industry's wages in the US.
And then there is so much more... Holy shit.
For myself I came to the conclusion that I'll not try to actually get a hold of any of the files, spreading them in the process as they are only accessable as torrents as of now. But, yeah, I was tempted.

I really can't see this hurting Sony much. The majority of consumers know nothing about this and will continue to mindlessly buy their products...

Damage within the industry.
Loss of credibility to employees, contractors, partners, producers, other studios. I'd say a massive loss.
Furthermore, more power to employees of all studios, as Sony acts just like every other studio, one could assume. As sheerly everyone can now get an inside look at how this system really works it is a severe strike in my opinion.
I mean, there is everything in this data. Internal, External, PR, everything.

isn't it? ;)

edit: in the mindset of this guy, you never know... It could have been him or the lobby around him. But how are you gonna prove it? The last point of injection/attack seems to have been Bangkok. So it can also have been friends of this TPB guy that was captured in Laos, I think?
If SPE or GOP don't speak up what it eventually was about, how can we know?

Sony's complaining about people getting Netflix accounts in countries where Netflix is not available and using VPN's and proxies to access the content. Sony even literally used the term "illegal paying customers".

Sony's gone mad. Totally mad.

Very interesting read Ferrao10 and I hadn't heard of it before. I agree with xer0s and suggest it will have little effect on the masses.

New message from the hackers/attackers:

Warning

We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.
Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
All the world will denounce the SONY.

Wasn't it Sony who has repeatedly had issues with hackers getting access to client data on unencrypted servers? You'd think they would learn a thing or two by now.

They've also canceled many premiers for the film.

I think this film cost $44 million to make. Will they even make their money back after this? Do we care?

I'm sure they will.. think of all the massive publicity they're getting without having to pay for it.

"This is the end" was one of the worst movies I had seen in a long time. The premise drew me in, the ego-wanking drove me out. I don't give a shit about the Interview. Not the least interested.

Here's a quote from some guy on a subreddit that itself has been deleted. Google webcache had a copy.
He only screened through SPE_01 through _07:
Yep... This is Hollywood on a stick, dipped in chocolate, covered in sprinkles.

The inner workings of the film industry have never been laid so bare before the World as they are here.

What amazes me is not just the sheer amount of information in these files, but the fact that a Company like Sony, of all companies, can be so internally disorganized when it comes to data and information management.

The entire Corporate summation of Sony Pictures is spread out in thousands of PDF and Excel spreadsheet files. Loosely organized in a nest of 63K folders.

There are account numbers, credit card statements, bank transfer statements, check scans, employee pictures, CVs, project budgets, memo deals, account codes, the list of critical data just goes on and on.

Sony will have to cancel all of their credit cards, get new bank accounts and change their internal cost center coding and invoicing structure.

The amount of potential financial damage this could have is complete and utter destruction. Sony better get educated quickly and act fast.

There is so much detail in these files it's scary.

I hope that whoever gets hold of this information acts ethically and does not try to bamboozle Sony. Sony is basically riddled with holes at this point. They have just been hit with the equivalent of a nuclear data bomb.

The irony is that the data they have been hit with is their own.

It's essentially "Fire Sale" time for Sony.
I won't give a link since that sub contains links to magnetfiles for the torrents. It is interesting enough to watch as it unfolds.

I'm pretty sure the latest warning is a red hering. Maybe the whole thing went over their heads, maybe their egos just exploded, maybe they want to buy themselfes time... The publication of the SSNs and the health reports of the employees was a bad and unforgivable move. But if something happens on Dec. 25th they will loose any backing from the public that they had build up. And it could lead to even worse diplomatic or even military steps.

Heard some guy on NPR who writes malware say basically the same things as this article...

http://www.wired.com/2014/12/evidence-o ... k-is-thin/

The fact the us govt is so adamant NK is guilty with no real evidence makes it pretty obvious NK have nothing to do with this. The real story here is why the red herring?...

Probably. Somebody who worked at Sony with ectensive knowledge of the network saw an opportunity to blame it on NK to take the heat off themselves...
