The new start menu with tiles is exactly what they should have done in Windows 8.. or 8.1.

According to folk lore, every second version of windows is good.
So... Windows XP was good; Windows Vista was bad; Windows 7 was good; Windows 8 was bad.
Let's skip Windows 9.

That's his point. He was saying it sarcastically.
They should have stuck with 9 because it was the "good" version, but now they're going right to another shitty version of Windows.

Microsoft has been playing catch up for so long now, I don't think they'd even know where to start with Windows 11.

I dunno, I never really had a hard time adjusting to Windows 8, and I have it installed on two desktops without touchscreen support

I was forced to use Win8.1 on my work laptop. I'm glad it's 8.1 because I can boot directly to desktop, but I got used to everything pretty quickly.
That's not to say the Metro interface is a huge design flaw for desktop systems. I don't use any Metro apps and I only use the start screen to type in (part of) the name of an app and hit enter to start it. I never click any tile on the start screen.
So yeah, it's workanle, not even all that annoying, but it's clear MS invested a lot of time in developing an interface that's completely superfluous.

I just hope MS finally got some sense in their head about that awful
environment variables dialog , which has been too small and unresizable ever since win95 or so.

Windows 7 works just fine for me, no need to upgrade to a buggy POS. In fact, I think 7 has been my best experience with a Windows OS so far. I can actually get my printer to work on the network!
