Since tickets to the UK were prohibitively expensive we had to change our vacation plans for this summer. Just booked our room and flights yesterday, and I believe I'll have much more fun going to the Virgin Islands in the middle of July. :icon32:
Among other things while we're there, I definitely plan on doing some diving, and I know the wildlife down there is beautiful so I want to get a decent submersible camera for some good piccies.
Does anybody here dive much and if so, can you give me some advice on which cameras and brands are good to take underwater? I've checked out a few -- while I know a little about camera specs in general, I don't know much about the more advanced features, and I don't know which ones have a reputation for holding up well when diving. I'd really like to spend less than $300 for one if possible.
Any suggestions?

an underwater case is the thing you need, though they're often as expensive as the camera itself. Canon makes a lot of them

That looks good, but the camera price ranges from $389 to $426. I'm not sure I want to drop that much.
You know of any good ones in a better price range that are easy to find cases for?

Not really a fan, no. I know what most of the specs mean, but I don't own a digicam. I bought one for my dad one year (Nikon Coolpix), but aside from that I haven't had much experience with the different brands.

You'll have to search for yourself, there are plenty of them
A friend of mine bought a Canon A80 last year, great cam. When she went diving in Egypt she bought an underwater case for it that costs 249 euros, which was only 50 euros less than the 300 she paid for the cam. Protection comes at a price.

for point and click you CAN'T go wrong with Canon or Fuji and TBH i think Fuji are alot better than Canon in the 3 to 4 mpix range, IMO
