Prosecutors had called for him to be considered insane.

The five judges were unanimous in ruling that Breivik was sane.

He was convicted of terrorism and premeditated murder, and given the maximum sentence of 21 years' imprisonment.

However, that can be prolonged at a later date if he is deemed to remain a danger to society.

I know it's the max. I looked it up after I read the article. I just find it ridiculous that it can be so short in that country for such crimes.

It's similar to how someone here in Canada can be labeled a dangerous offender and held beyond sentence length.

Prisons in northern Europe are all about isolation, you don't let inmates get together in crowded spaces or segregate them by gang affiliation / ethnic background. We generally like our prison populations quiet and controllable, it's crazy, i know.

And he's not some insane killer, he's a political terrorist. People like Breivnik don't make shanks out of toothbrushes and stab the nearest person, they read books.

They gave him everything they could and he will never be free again.

I found it interesting that he smiled as the verdict was read out, like he had won. Like he expected it to be the maximum sentence and that he felt it both unjust and pathetic at the same time.

He always said he should be allowed to go free or be killed. Nothing inbetween. His smile was one of knowing, one of sorrow for his country (that it is so "weak") and ultimately one of amusement.

I am slightly inclined to think that he has proved his point. Admittidly his point was fucking retarded and nothing more than right wing extremism, but he proved it none the less.
