Custom sound effects

Post by Eraser »

Something I've realized while working on my EntityPlus map is that the use of sound effects is very important to purvey a certain atmosphere or effect. I think the topic of sound effects is greatly under appreciated by the average deathmatch mapper, as anything louder than the soft crisping of a fire or a soft hum from a teleporter interferes too much with the sounds of an approaching enemy.

Maybe I'm asking the wrong crowd because of this, but I was wondering if any of you have any good resources for royalty free sounds (preferably licensed under a creative commons license). I've been grabbing some sounds off of http://www.freesound.org but their search tools are terrible (gives seemingly unrelated results) and most sounds they have on offer aren't very clean (as in they're cluttered with background noise or combinations of sounds).

You won`t regret it. Absolutely free, good quality, tons of ambient sounds, and even voice-overs and music. (Good for EPlus?)

I think it plays a huge role, but in Quake-MP game, you don't want it to take too much of your attention and disturb sounds from other players and so.

In a Quake-SP, it doesn't matter, it just adds to the experience!

I found quite a few good sounds over here:
http://www.therecordist.com/free-sfx

The page says that they are "free for personal use", but isn't exactly clear what "personal use" means. Does a non-commercial map for a commercial game count as "personal use"? I'm not sure.

Could try your hand at making your own. A portable recording device like a Roland Edirol can go a long way. Couple that with Goldwave and some rudimentary knowledge of compression and signal clean-up... you could have yourself some decent sound FX.
