An alpha test thingy....

Post by Foo »

Hallo.

Level layout test time. I have dressed this in the very ugliest of textures, for your visual enjoyment. Any opinions on level flow, item placement and layout alterations would be most welcome. Visual stuff obviously a bit irrelevant :D

Setup is for 1v1 tourney. Bots play pretty good, but get a bit obsessed over the tall jumppad.

I've just done quick run through the map (can'y play it right now), and after few seconds of doing it I thought: "This map just remindes me one old map, hmmm, Dry Ice I suppose it was". Heh, and then I remembered that it might have benn called foo3dm1 :). Man, I loved that old map, and played it like mad years ago. I have to dl it again and smash some bots on it :). I'm just want to say that you have some recognizable style, and I really like it. I'll try to play some games later with this one, and give you some feedback about gameplay.

Yup I should probably go full disclosure on this - I took that map and reworked it with a view that it could have been way more interesting. More vertical sections, better interconnection, a few more areas, and better item layout.

Have done something similar with foo3dm2 as well, but I still have lots to do with that yet.

Glad you liked the original :D

Hrm, megaupload must run regional servers and it hasn't replicated yet.

Can you try it again and see if it appears? If not I'll have to dump it on another host >:E

The teleport near center(left in pic) needs rotated to face the stairs. Looks weird as is.

I did some 1v1 games (with bots) on this map. Generally it's nice, pretty solid gameplay. But there are some things that I would change:

-There is one big issue on this map, and it's YA to YA route. As you can see on picture belowe, it's too short, I can move very fast from one armor to another, and easily control whole map by that. After collecting weapons in the beggining of the game, it was enough for me to take this one route (YA near PG -> jp -> lower YA -> tele -> YA near PG), and checking MH from time to time. You have to block this somehow, right now there is not much reason to use rest of the map at all. I suggest to block jp hole, and move jp (look at the picture)

- Second thing, MH is too near to armors, and it's too easy to collect. I would really like you to place it as it was in Dry ice, on the shelf where 50 hp is right now. It would make me to explore map more.

- This PG hallway is useless for me. I didn't use it at all. It looks uninteresing, and feel unimportant, so remove it :). Move PG to the place marked on one of the pictures.

- You have very nice bridge in lower YA room. I suggest changing position of the armor with 50 Hp. Also move YA a little further into hallway leading to LG level, to encourage player to go there (after PG). Right now I didn't use it even once (and why should I exactly?).

Anyway, I really like this map, and I'm sure it will come really nice in the end. Waiting for next release!

Yay feedback, thanks shad ;)

I was concerned about the YA route too, found that although items are fairly sparse, you can still sweep the YA/MH/YA and usually the cluster of shards near the MH, too. I'll figure out a different setup for the JP and TP, they need to change.

Will give the item placements a try too!

I checked this out last week but haven't got back to it as I've been rebuilding this computer.

The layout seemed solid, and I totally agree with Shadow on all of the points. I'll try to get some actual games in on this sometime this week.

I love the area with the bridge, and could see some great fights in this room.
