Here's my latest map, The Healer for Quake 2. It's a small and fast tourney map that uses id's excellent Q2 stock textures. It was created for the 7th q2c mapping contest and will show up on the tastyspleen.net q2 servers soon. You can also play it on the public airrocket.net q2 server (just /connect airrocket.net).
I know that only few ppl in here still care for Q2, but even if you don't grab the map, some screenies never hurt, eh?

Re: [Quake2] spirit2dm4 -- The Healer (final release)
I have fond memories of Q2. Think I'm going to reinstall and give some feedback on the map later.
Looks pretty sweet, dichtfux, despite obvious engine limitations, particularly the blurry textures, but I always admire people trying to get the most out of older tech
You mention few people still care for Q2, which I don't think is necessarily true, but yeah, a lot of folks tend to move on, so I'm curious what the insentives are for you to map for it, rather than map for later tech.
In your opinion, how does Q2 better Q3, apart from having a SP component?

Re: [Quake2] spirit2dm4 -- The Healer (final release)
Don't get me wrong, there's quite a few ppl who still care for q2 -- but they aren't here at q3w. There's a very active q2 community over at tastyspleen.net for example. And I guess my q2 maps get a lot more playtime on public servers than my q3 maps do.
I don't think that Q2 is better than Q3, but I absolutely love it's style. The textures and weapons are great (though not high-res), SP is great fun. I got to know some of the q2 folks cause I'm a level designer for quake2world, I guess that's why I make q2 maps from time to time. And my time is limited: I made this map in 5 days -- try that with a q4, d3 or ut3 map.
The last reason I'll mention here: for me, MP never was about nice grafics or stunning special effects. It's about good layouts and atmosphere. You can achieve both with q2. (And I don't even have the hardware to run crysis or games like that.)
Of course things like curves and models would often come in handy and I miss some q3 features from time to time when I make q2 maps, but it's not that I only create q2 maps.
Btw: Have a look at these maps by jester to get an impression of what you can do with q2.

Re: [Quake2] spirit2dm4 -- The Healer (final release)
Unfortunately, I'm not in posession of Quake 2, so I won't be able to give it a test run or two.
By the way: followed your link to jester's maps: This is fucking awesome! I only saw the screenshots and immediately thought of your seemingly true comment about the importance of atmosphere in Quake 2: this guy's work is impressive!

Tbh, for me q2 had a lot more real atmosphere (I'm still talking about mp game) then q3. Q3 have great gameplay, but there is hardly any atmosperemonaster wrote:This is fucking awesome! Spirit - great job, we should test it someday

Re: [Quake2] spirit2dm4 -- The Healer (final release)
Sure, it's on my server, we can play anytime. Just ask on IRC.
I just played spirit2dm2 on my server against some guy and lost 28:0. Quite disappointing on one of your own maps.

Re: [Quake2] spirit2dm4 -- The Healer (final release)
Very Nice..glad to see your still popping up Q2 maps. It actually gave me a reason to load up my Eraser mod.
I've never played Q2 online..I didn't even know it was still going.

Re: [Quake2] spirit2dm4 -- The Healer (final release)
I don't know if it's just me, but I never managed to get the Eraser bots to even use a fucking jumppad. They always get stuck on them. Pretty stupid.
If you wanna play online, get r1q2 and check the servers of tastyspleen. Join the sunday splatterfest if you find the time.

This is very cool!
My track might show else, but this is so true. Mp is all about the layout and the atmosphere - well, it should be.dichtfux wrote:The last reason I'll mention here: for me, MP never was about nice grafics or stunning special effects. I agree, the atmosphere in Q2 is much better, at least I think iDs stock Q3 levels feels very stiff in that manner.ShadoW_86 wrote:Tbh, for me q2 had a lot more real atmosphere (I'm still talking about mp game) then q3. Q3 have great gameplay, but there is hardly any atmospere :).
