High pitched sound effects on Q3A (loooong shot)

Hi there,
haven't posted here in a while. But basically today I opened up Q3A for the first time in about 3 years. And for some reason all the sound effects are really high pitched, the announcer dude sounds like a smurf. Its very strange, has anybody else had this? If anybody here still plays the game that is! Im using the latest point version, I have absolutely no idea why its doing this! Please help as its very annoying!

what happens if you temporarily remove all the cfg files from your baseq3 folder and restart the game?
assuming you're on windows, what happens when you turn hardware acceleration for sound all the way down in windows?

That actually sounds really cool. I'd find it pretty funny to hear "Holy Shit!" from a smurf.

Though, it would be annoying for weapon sounds and jumping...

Go to:
Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Set-Up Utility:

Audio Devices/ make sure both HZ settings are at 44100.0HZ (may have reverted to 32000HZ. If so, change to 41100.0HZ)
