Lake Tahoe / SF
Afternoon.
The missus and I are heading over SF way this summer for a 2 week holiday. We're planning a week in the city and then a week somewhere 'outside' and 'ideallic' so to speak, with trees and walking and shit like that. I've been scouring the nets and have stumbled across Lake Tahoe and thought where better for stateside vacation advice than Q3W. Is it any good? Worth visiting?
Anyone have any pointers for something along the great outdoors kind of thing around the SF area if Lake Tahoe is shite?
Fanks

Don't know much about Tahoe, but my impression is that its a bit yuppie-ish. The best outdoorsy area around there is easily Yosemite, but I don't know how much is open in the winter. Another park closer to SF is Point Reyes Nat'l seashore, but you won't find many trees there.
Another good bet is to just head north from SF up scenic Hwy 1. There are loads of State Parks along the way. Salt Point, Point Arena, Jug Handle, Mackerrisher, and the Lost Coast are good places to start.

If you're really ambitious, and you want to see some serious trees, make it up to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Avenue of the Giants.

Nice. I guess we're looking for somewhere we can stay for the week and do 'stuff'. A bit of hiking, some watersports, chilling, some nightlife. That kind of thing.
I'll have a butchers. Thanks for the tip.

oic. Also, I missed the part about going in summer until I read it again.
So... yeah, none of those places will have watersports or nightlife. Some of the State Parks are in/nearby towns, but none are very exciting. You might be able to find some outfitters for kayaking or rafting. Otherwise it's a couple breweries maybe but that's probably it.
For what you're looking for, Tahoe is probably a good bet.
You may want to check out Napa, too, if you're into that.

stay on the south side of the lake and you have full on casinos and all that comes with that.
i've only been their in the winter so I've got no clue about H2O sports, but as there are six or seven big ski areas around the lake, I'm sure you could find all the hiking you want.
you've also got reno just over the other side of the mountains.
edit: unless you are set on seeing SF (cool city by the way) if you are going to fly that far I'd give some thought to a Seattle/Vancouver/Whistler idea. You can do city/outdoor shit all in the same day around Seattle. Vancouver-same story, plus they are 420 friendly up there.

I live near Tahoe. Never been in the summer myself but it's a great place nonetheless.
I've been meaning to go when it's not a clusterfuck of snow and snow and more snow and jackasses (people...)
Go for it. It'll be fun.
You could always drive a bit south from SF and head over to Santa Cruz. Small surfer town with great beaches and excellent food.
