MGS4 on PS3

Post by tnf »

Is it even remotely possible to follow storyline-wise this game without having finished all the previous ones? I liked the gameplay of MGS2 and 3 (only finished #2), but since I didn't finish the very first game I never really felt like I knew what the fuck was going on...like when they started talking about the le la li loo la or whatever the fuck they are called...who are they anyhow?

Is there a place you can get a brief (if that is even possible) synopsis of what has happened up to the start of MGS4 so I can be a little clued in as to what is going on? Or, does MGS4 give you an overview of everything in game as you go? I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to that last question.

Or if one of you MGS nerds feels like exercising your writing skills, throw together an outline of MGS1 - 3.

As long as the killing is good, I'll play the game regardless. Storyline is icing on the cake.

i played the first three games. i don't understand the storyline and don't care for it. its overly complicated and stupid. just read a plot synopsis of each one on wikipedia?

Two of my friends played through 4 without playing through the others, and they enjoyed it.

You'll be able to follow the plot just fine however a lot of the emotional impact will likely be lost on you.

Yeah, well, even the first MGS made lots of references to the earlier Metal Gear games; but compared to the later games the plot was far clearer and more satisfying. Kojima just couldn't let it rest though. It's hard to have much emotional investment in a sniffling pedo and an ageing man in a mullet, which is a large part of the reason why I've not bothered with a PS3

are you suggesting you have to be a sniffling pedo or aged old man with a mullet to own a ps3?

i didn't have a problem following the story even though i'd never played a MGS game before although it makes you cringe its that bad :(

if you striped all the gloss from the game you'd find that the splinter cell series of games have much better gameplay imo.

worth playing tho!

MGS1 (from what I remember) -
terrorists hijack a nuclear weapon on Shadow Moses (in this case, it's a biped tank (something like a 3rd generation Metal Gear).
Snake, being the badass that he is, jumps in and kicks everyones ass.
There's something about a cyborg ninja, and an anime nerd in there too. Nerd helps you out. Don't remember about the ninja.

MGS2 - Snake is not around for this mission. Pansy ass girly boy is sent in instead to handle rediculously retarded terrorist characters like Fatman. This time, the terrorists thought it would be fun to hijack a waste treatment facility or something which is actually a cover for the development of the next-gen Metal Gear.
The project fails and pansy ass saves the day.

MGS3 - This takes place in the 1960s or somewhere around that time. You play as original snake (snake in MGS1 ends up being a clone or something along those lines)
You get to hang around in a clusterfuck of foliage a lot of the time. Terrorists are back but this time they're even more retarded. They want to take over a rocket-tank that can launch nuclear missles from Russia to anywhere in the US...
This is the pre-Metal Gear weapon. In a scene you find the guy who came up with Metal Gear who raves on and on about "bipedal tanks".
Ending was crap imo.

Not bothering with MGS 4. MGS 1 was the best imo and the storyline is just a mess of half-baked ideas tied loosely together with "terrorists" and "metal gear".

I realize that but he's a bit of a douche and isn't as badass as he should be. Nor is he the main character.

Well, I'm on Mission 4 now, or 3, and whether you like the storyline or not (and have the patience to sit through 20 minute cutscenes) this game is pretty fucking incredible in its presentation and execution. Some of the fights in the cutscenes rival big hollywood stuff in terms of the complexity of the scene (like the raiden/gekko fights when vamp shows up). I didn't follow the previous stories too closely, but this one is easier to keep track of even with the references to shit I don't know anything about.
Whatever you say about the storytelling, this game is an amazing technological feat.

you won't get all the references, but you'll be able to follow the basic plot and appreciate what the game is trying to do. it's pretty well-presented and fun, but it's so overblown...

Ok, cutscenes don't normally bother me...but the one at the start of act 3...holy crap I think there was about 35-40 minutes shit. I've never seen one that long. Wish you could at least fast forward while reading the text.

So I just did a 15 minute sneaking mission (after the 45 minute cutscene) then am treated to another 20 minutes of one. Jesus.

Says online that they total about 8 hours for the game, that sound right? 4 full length movies worth of cutscenes. Just too much, even if they are well done.

the game is really short. only 6 hours or less of gameplay, but around 9 hours of movie.

I figured this is how you'd feel. Being a huge fan of the entire series, I enjoyed them all very much.

Ok this game’s fucking awesome; it’s what I’d expect next gen gaming to be. I don’t mind the cut scenes, in fact I find them totally immersing.
