President of the Mormon Church has died
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/01/27/obit.h ... index.html
I didn't know they had a 'president' - I thought it was an elder or something like that.
Will the funeral procession be full of guys in short sleeved shirts with ties, backpacks, and nametags riding mountain bikes?
Any Mormons here? I had some friends that were Mormons in high school and what they told me about the religion (the stuff you hear when you are on the 'inside' is way different than the public face the church puts on).
And they always build their churches near elementary schools around here. Odd.

Re: President of the Mormon Church has died
Had no idea there was a president either...but wth is a president of a religion anyway. Is it something like the pope, or what?
A buddy of mine grew up in a Mormon family, I don't know him very well but the stuff I've heard him say about what they do and why is pretty confusing in my eyes.
The bike ridding thing from what I remember is something you do when you reach a certain age. At that age you move out of you parents house and live with someone else, and you can only come in contact with your family on a very strict basis.
The thing that left me kind of in a state of disbelief was he was saying the only contact you could have with your family was through email, like once a month as I said above...
He might have just be fucking with me, but I didn't try and argue with how he was brought up.

Re: President of the Mormon Church has died

your thinking a bit too far outside the box, but that is a good idea though.

Re: President of the Mormon Church has died
Interesting thing (to me at least)
A couple of years ago the place i've worked at for the last "20 FUCKING YEARS", was sold to a pakistani.
He told me his mother wanted to send him, after prep school in England, to college in America. (His father had money apparently)
He wanted to go to college in California, but she wanted to send him to the most straight laced school she could find and he ended up going to the University of Utah. (He did graduate from there with a degree as a nuclear engineer)
Now he told me he was invited to a dinner party at the Dean's house along with several other prominent students. He didn't know why, but he went just the same.
At some point during the party the Dean asked him into a private room and asked him if he would do a favor to the Mormons and be a missionary for the Mormon religion into Pakistan. Since he was a confirmed Muslim he could get in without suspicion. He said, "umm nope".
My boss told me that Pakistan welcomes all missionaries from all religions into the country, except for Mormons. So I guess he wanted him to be the James Bond of missionaries.
He sold our business about a year later, but he seemed like a very devout honest guy. I still talk to him sometimes. So I guess I believe him. Still, true or not, even the Muslims find the Mormons kind of wierd, which is kind of amusing.

Looks like Romney has a job to fall back on that he has a greater chance of winning.

Re: President of the Mormon Church has died
The Mormon faith is more a Business than a Religion. A few years back there was an artical in Time magazine that explained the whole process. Instead of asking for money when you go to church (what ever you can afford) the mormons want 10% of your income. If you pay this amount then you will be in "Good Standing" with the church. If you do not then you are no longer in "Good Standing". The more you make the better off you are in the ranks of the church. If you give them lots of money because you make lots of money then you can be a Bishop.
I have never seen an religion so focused on money (material wealth).
It's sick.

Jews have to buy their way into heaven as well.
Re: President of the Mormon Church has died
it's interesting how the newer a 'religion' is, the more fraudulent it appears, most likely because we can see close up the thinness of its claim to religion status. the origins of older religions are just as daft once you shake off the dust of them, and realise it's either a crazy person who claims god talked to him or a jewish carpenter turned preacher whose followers reckon actually is god
Re: President of the Mormon Church has died
Maybe there's a bell curve of credibility, seeing as much older religions are also laughed at & ridiculed.

sounds like catholicism to me. in germany they take the tithe directly out of your paycheck like income taxes, iirc.

Jews believe that any righteous people can get into Heaven. They don't believe that there is only one path to Heaven, and therefore good people of any religion can still go to Heaven. This is one main reason you'll never find Jews trying to convert you to their religion.

As far as I know about Jews (at least the Orthodox Jews) the only thing they care about is the fact that they weren't born a gentile or a woman.
Who knows? They may say anyone can enter heaven, but it seems like they don't want them there.

Judaism is the only religion that when you walk in to their place of worship and ask to convert, they want to know why. As in, why would you want to be a Jew?HM-PuFFNSTuFF wrote:Jews believe that any righteous people can get into Heaven.
